balance-rr trunks on HP switches

I've 3 servers each with 4 NIC's setup using balance-rr on a storage network. I'm trying to get these all to talk together with an HP2920G switch, but I can't seem to get it behaving quite right. As this isn't an LACP trunk then I can't use the standard HP trunk feature on these NIC's? (Is that correct?)

If I have all the NIC's patched into the same VLAN then I can't get the throughput I'm expecting. If I spread the NIC's out over 4VLANs then I can have the throughput I'd expect but the connection doesn't seem resilient and there are packets being lost between the hosts.

The NIC's on the hosts have to be in balance-rr mode, so with this restriction then how can I get the trunk working better on the switch?
