Can I add pre owned 3810M switch to my Aruba Central?

Hi all,

I'm looking to add a pre-owned layer-3 switch 3810M (JL073A) to my existing Aruba Central dashboard. Do I need anything else apart from Aruba Central license against the serial no. of device? Since the EoSL is 2028, is there any other challenge involved?

Re: Can I add pre owned 3810M switch to my Aruba Central?

Hi Rishi,

You’ve raised a good question. Here's a detailed answer based on current Aruba Central capabilities and ownership policies:

Can You Add a Pre-Owned 3810M to Aruba Central?

Short answer:
You can try to onboard a pre-owned Aruba 3810M (JL073A) to Aruba Central, but full support is limited, and there are important conditions:

Key Points to Consider:

  1. Aruba Central Support

    • The 3810M runs ArubaOS-Switch (AOS-S), not AOS-CX.

    • Aruba Central support for AOS-S devices is mostly limited to monitoring. You won’t get full configuration management like with AOS-CX models (e.g., 6200/6300 series).

  2. Ownership and License Check

    • You’ll need a valid Aruba Central subscription license mapped to the switch’s serial number.

    • If the device was previously registered in someone else's Aruba Central account, you won’t be able to onboard it unless the previous owner removes it or Aruba Support clears it after verifying ownership.

  3. EoSL Consideration

    • Yes, the 3810M's End of Support Life (EoSL) is 2028, which means you're still within the support window — that's good.

    • However, Aruba Central cloud support is evolving, and older models may be phased out for new features, so future limitations could apply.

Recommended Steps:

  1. Factory reset the device

  2. Check with Aruba Support or ASP portal:

    • Is the device registered to another account?

    • Can it be released?

  3. Map the Aruba Central license to the serial number via your HPE account or distributor

  4. Attempt onboarding via Device Inventory in Central

Consider Alternatives

If you're setting up a new or cloud-managed network, Aruba AOS-CX series (6200/6300/6400) offers better long-term support and seamless Central integration.
