HP 1620-24G VLAN printer sharing help
Hello
I work at a family run garden center in the UK. I recently purchased a managed switch (HP 1620-24g) as we need 2 VLANS. This is the first time I have ever delved more into a higher level switch.
I need a computer on VLAN 2 to access a shared printer on a machine on VLAN 1. I have untagged ports on VLAN as 1 to 20, & untagged 21-24 for VLAN 2, I belive this is to keep the traffic seperate for the moment.
Do I need to tag port 1 on VLAN1 & port 20 on VLAN2, to allow local network i.e homegroup and fileshares including printers? And does this mean I need a switch with patch over cables going into port 1 & 2 as a middle man?
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks,
Martin

Re: HP 1620-24G VLAN printer sharing help
Why do you need two VLANs?
You can think of your two VLANs turning your one physical switch into two seperate switches that are not connected in any way. You need a router to be able to communicate between two VLANs. Some switches do have built in routing capability but the 1620 that you have does not.
VLAN tagging is simply a way of identifying two different VLANs that are transported accross the same physical cable. Both ends of the cable need to be configured the same way. In this case, I don't think that tagging will help you.
You can use a cable to connect an untagged port in VLAN 1 to an untagged port in VLAN 2 but then you are effectively back to having just one VLAN but wasting two ports on the switch.
If you can tell us what you are tying to accomplish, we will be better able to help.
