HP Procurve 2910al-24G Switch (J9145A) setting up a home lab for MCSA

I really could use some help from someone that knows networking much better than I.

I have this setup right now:

Cable Modem (IPS) > Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router > 2910al-24G Switch (J9145A) (all wired devices connected here)

I have a Dell 2950 Server that I would like to use for studying for my MCSA.  I would like this to be on seperate network so that when I setup VMs on it so I can play with the different MS servies like DHCP, DNS and etc it doesn't affect the Home network.

At first I tried to pick up a Netgear N300 router and plugged it into the switch.  I setup on new network and seems to work on way.  From Lab to Home not the other way.  I would like to be able to Remote Desktop into server from Home network since al equipment is headless in closet.

Home Network right is 10.0.1.X , 255.255.255.0

Lab Network is 10.0.2.X,  255.255.255.0

Right now with setup from Lab I can access and ping anything on the 10.0.1.X network and all seems great.

When I use my desktop I can't reach anything on the 10.0.2.X network.  That is what my problem is at.

To be honest when comes to advanced networking I am lacking.  People are saying I can do this at the switch not needing this second router with VLANs.  I haven't used them and don't know how I would set this up.

If anyone could help me out it would be GREAT!  I really need to get this going ASAP.

Your N300 firewall is blocking access.

You say, " I setup on new network and seems to work on way"

So, if you ping in the direction that works

10.1.1.5 -> 10.1.2.5

Your Ping request packet header has:

Dest IP: 10.1.2.5; SRC IP: 10.1.1.5           Succeeds
Ping response is sent with packet header:
Dest IP: 10.1.1.5; SRC IP: 10.1.2.5           Succeeds

So, by definition of a successful ping, you have tested and confirmed that traffic works in both directions.

If you are unable to initiate a ping in theother direction, it isn't the network that is at fault, it is security settings, presumably on your firewall, but potentially on your hosts.
