Modular switches

Modular switches

I have a query about the use of modular switches V's VRRP.

Lets say the network comprises of a single core switch and some access layer switches.  Each access switch has two uplinks to the core.  STP takes care of blocking one uplink.

The uplinks on the core switch side, connect to seperate switch modules in case of a module failure.

Now onto VRRP.  If the above design was changed to two core switches (with VRRP) and access switch with their uplinks connected to seperate core switches - what is the benefit here?

Can the modular switch chassis' fail?  Is that the benefit?

Re: Modular switches

STP takes care of Layer-2 redundancy, VRRP takes care of Layer-3 redundancy providing and alternative gateway if the primary one fails.
