Multiple VLAN's on multiple 5400zl switches config for HA - which config options should I look at?
Please bear with me for a brief discussion of what I'm trying to do and what I have to work with:
I have two ProCurve 5400zl modular switches.
I have N quantity of Linux based servers with multiple NIC's.
I have two Juniper routers which provided connectivity to the outside world and over which I have very limited control.
Management wants a high-availability, fault-tolerant solution with no single points of failure.
3 VLAN's (external, internal, storage) need to exist.
Linux servers will have 3 physical connections to the switches, 1x VLAN, per management directive.
Linux servers use bonding in failover mode for each VLAN physical connection, ergo there are a total of 6 NIC ports in use (3x2) on each server, in order to avoid SPF of the connection.
I need to take the 2 ProCurve switches and configure and interconnect them in such a way that the VLAN structures are common, that half of the bonded pair of connections from each server is connected to each switch. I also need to connect each of the Juniper routers to both switches correctly. The goal is to ensure that no one element (NIC, cable, port, switch, router) could fail and cause loss of connectivity.
So I need to read up on how to set all this up. With all the various options and different things that can be done, and the limited amount of time I have to do things I'm hoping that I can get a point in the right direction in terms of what exactly to research. I also have a couple of questions related to the finished goal setup:
Do I need to use STP to accomplish this?
Or is the VLAN-tagging sufficient?
How should I interconnect the two switches?
Since ports on both traffics could be in use at any time, I'm assuming that for performance I would want the fastest possible interconnection between the two switches for the purposes of moving data. I know the switch can autosense server/switch over 1Gb, can it also do it over a 10Gb connection? If so, is there a preferred type (BaseT, SFP, etc.)?
What issues, if any, do I have to worry about with regard to Juniper routers connecting to both switches?
Thanks in advance.
