New W_15_12_0006 firmware
Just upgraded to this firmware and my show tech says it's found one J9146A module and two J9008A modules. The J9146A is the switch itself; but there are no other modules installed in this box. Is this some kind of new module I didn't know about, or is it a "ghost" module?
HP-2910al-24G-PoE# show running-config
Running configuration:
; J9146A Configuration Editor; Created on release #W.15.12.0006
; Ver #04:01.ff.35.05:ca
hostname "HP-2910al-24G-PoE"
module 1 type j9146a
module 2 type j9008a
module 3 type j9008a

Re: New W_15_12_0006 firmware
J9008A is a 2 port 10GigE SFP+ module, which would be installed in the rear of the switch.
Are you saying you don't have a J9146A with two 2-port 10GigE SFP+ modules installed in the rear?

No modules whatsoever. Both expansion ports on the rear are blanked off.

Yep. Power cycled.
Nope. I'm connecting via serial. Only 1 device (not on network yet).
Yep. Nothing installed in empty slots in rear.

Re: New W_15_12_0006 firmware
I'm just curious if the same was displayed under the previous software or not.
Honestly, I'm hoping someone else might step in with some advice, because I'm not really sure at this point and I don't have any hardware to experiment with.

Yes, I saved old flash to secondary.
BUT, I also "factory reset" the switch after I saw the extra modules. Restarted it and they reappeared.

Re: New W_15_12_0006 firmware
So, I've been reading the configuration guide for your switch... the "module" command apparently can be issued to define configurations for modules which are not yet installed into the switch, for the purpose of defining configurations in preparation for installing new modules. There doesn't appear to be any syntax (at least not defined in the manual) to define "no module", so I'm wondering if it just defaults to that particular module and, as you suggested, is a "ghost module" defining settings for a module that doesn't yet (and may never) exist in that switch.
Since the modules don't exist, based on what I'm finding in the config guide, I probably wouldn't worry about it if everything else works in regards to defining appropriate settings for the ports that actually do physically exist.
I'd love to hear other expert opinions on this because I'm really just speculating and taking educated guesses based on available literature here.
Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck getting everything running the way you need it!
FYI, here's the config guide: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02564351/c02564351.pdf

Re: New W_15_12_0006 firmware
I have tried to use the module command from within the config shell as well as the base CLI shell. Neither accepts "module".
I opened the back of the switch and both expansion slots are completely empty.
I'm going to try to copy a config file from a known good switch to this new box. I'm pretty sure I didn't have these extra modules before upgrading to W_15_12_0006. Might be an unexpected "pre-release" anomaly.
Thank you, everyone. I love this peer-to-peer support environment. It may now be time for HP to pickup the disccussion.
