Random port restarts on Procurve 2610

Hi,

We experience a problem with all of our Procurve 2610 switches that ports are restarted frequently.

The firmware is 11.54.

The ports experiencing the problem are all connected to Wyse P20 thin clients.

The ports are all set to auto-10 in an effort to solve the problem, but that did not help.

We also see a lot of CRC errors on the ports.

Does this indicate problems with the switches or with the attached devices?

Kind regards,

Arjan

Re: Random port restarts on Procurve 2610

Hello Arjan,

Without seeing some techincal data from the switch, I am not able to tell what is happening. What I can say is that we do not currently have any issues reported with Wyse thin clients in general.

When you say the ports are restarting I guess you mean it goes down and then up again. If you run a 'show tech all' on the switch CLI while logging the session to a file, you could attach it to the thread. That might contain information that can help us get closer to the root cause.

How often is "frequently" exactly? Are some ports / devices affected more than others?

If this was a hardware problem on the switch, I would expect the ports to not work at all.

You might want to check with Wyse if they have similar issues reported. Also, assuming you have patch panels inbetween, you may want to attach a terminal directly on the switch with a shorter patch cable, and see how it fares. Finally, if you have different models of switches, you may want to see if the terminals operate better on another model.

Should this crosstesting show that the switch may be the common denominator, then I'd recommend contacting HP support and log a case.

Best regards,

Michael

Re: Random port restarts on Procurve 2610

Thin clients should not cause network loops in an of themselves, but the behavior sounds suspiciously like STP/LACP blocking ports to prevent a broadcast storm, as if it is detecting a loop somehow, then opening the port, then blocking it again. The switch's log would be most helpful.
