Strange routing problem on 5412zl device?

Hi,

I have a large L2 network which I am trying to carve up using VLAN's etc...

I have a 5412zl which has some servers plugged into it. These have teamed Broadcom NIC's using SLB.

Connected to the 5412zl is a 2910al...

As a test only currently the setup is like this:

2910al VLAN 1 untagged on all ports except port 24, IP of 192.168.1.1/24

I have a PC plugged in on port 1 which can ping this gateway address and get to the servers (see below for more info)

2910al VLAN 1000 untagged on port 24, IP of 172.16.1.1/16

This port connects to the 5412zl.

2910al static route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.16.1.2

On the 5412zl I have a port also untagged in VLAN 1000 with an IP of 172.16.1.2/16

All the rest of the ports are untagged in VLAN 1 and are on a 10.0.0.0 network.

5412zl static route of 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.1

At this point everything appears to be working... however I then discover that some of the servers are only responsive intermittently, detected via a ping. If I pull out a cable of the NIC team, things start working again, but still with a few dropouts. and then eventually it will fall over again... It does not matter which NIC's/cables get pulled it just seems to start working again, then all of a sudden it will stop again... a reboot of the servers also causes this...

Interestingly when I attempted to run Wireshark on one of the servers to try and see what was going on, all issues seem to stop?

I am wondering how to troubleshoot this?

I had this problem as well. You can use the 802.3ad Link Aggregation with LACP. Just setup a trunk on the switch with LACP enabled on the ports for your server. Or call HP support and open a case, its free but might take a while.

Cisco switches may also have issues with SLB, see: http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Comp/comp.dcom.sys.cisco/2008-02/msg00392.html
