Hello,
We have a switch from the ZL series, the 5412zl. We use the J8702A modules, which are not available anymore. Are the new module for the ZL series downward compatible or which of the new modules can we use?
Thank You!
If the HP E5412 zl Switch is running with Compatibility Mode enabled (which is the default value) it can be equipped with a mix of zl Modules (1st Generation) and v2 zl Modules (2nd Generation) without issues.
From documentation: Compatibility Mode allows the inter-operation of v2 zl Modules with the older zl Modules in the same chassis switch. When in Compatibility Mode, the switch accepts either v2 zl Modules or zl Modules. The default is Compatibility Mode enabled. If Compatibility Mode is disabled by executing the no allow-v1-modules command, the switch will only power up v2 zl Modules.
You should pay attention to run your Switch with the newest Firmware image available at the moment (as of June 2016: K.16.01.0007 or K.15.18.0011, see relevant Release Notes) to avoid incompatibility when running any combination of zl Modules and/or v2 zl Modules (On a 2013 manual HP advised to use at least Firmware K15.04.0002 - in particular when using the J9546A HP 8-port 10GBase-T v2 zl Module - or possibly newer...but that requirement has 3 years now and newer Firmwares are available).
