Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

Hi, hopefully an easy one.

Can't seem to get Procurve Manager to give me any traffic information (from the Traffic tab) although it's fine with the Procurve 1800's we have dotted around. The graph thing is grey and all ports in the box at the bottom (under Msg/Time) state:

"timestamp: sFlow updated [id=1185796|ifIndex=296] receiver timout [420s]

SNMPv3 is enabled on switch, details are correct in the agent/discovery areas on PCM and firewall is disabled on the PC with PCM installed. There is nothing between the switch and the PCM machines, they are directly connected.

Is there something I'm missing?

Anyone? So many problems on a live network and so little time :(

What software version are you running on the 5406? There's a known issue on K.14.x regarding sFlow not working, which might be what you're running into.

Re: Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

Well, for traffic monitoring there's also the matter of how sFlow is configured, which you haven't mentioned in the post above.

You should check this document to verify that the configuration is proper and you're not missing anything:

http://www.draware.dk/fileadmin/SolarWinds/Guide/AN-S6_sFlow-PCM-traffic-mon-final-081108.pdf

If your configuration there is fine as described in the document then I'd recommend opening a support case as the next step so that we can have a proper look at this.

Justin

Re: Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

Cheers, I shall take a look tomorrow. I was under the impression it should work out of the box (and also why I've been fiddling with the config of one switch and leaving the other untouched, however both are still not working)

I was also under the impression that you could turn sflow off (which I've tried) so it reports via SNMP like the more basic switches

Re: Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

There are far too many different configurations, options and deployments with these fully-managed switches for them to ever be plug and play :) that's why there's also so much documentation (have you checked the management & configuration guide?). Basic configuration is very easy but if you have a 5406 I'd imagine you want to use it for more than just single-VLAN L2 packet switching and basic SNMP monitoring.

Regarding SNMP, you could use it to report things like port status and available bandwidth, but beyond that for proper traffic monitoring I fairly certain it's not possible without sFlow since that's made explicitly for this purpose too :)

Justin

Re: Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

I've read and re-read that PDF document before, yet for some reason coming in this morning, doing the same again and setting sflow up correctly, it now works! Amazing what a mind fresh from a weekend is capable of ;)

Many thanks - I can now stare at pretty graphs to my heart's content :)

Re: Traffic monitoring for 5406zl via Procurve Manager

please help..

i have pro-curve manager application here, this pro-curve manager apps used to find where the specific IP connected to specific switch.

My question is, why is it that when i tried to find the specific switch location of my IP, it gives me the wrong switch location.

But in other IPs, it gives me their  correct switch location.

Anyone..please help... thanks
