Trouble with GBIC's
Please help!!
Was hoping somone could help me with best practices or advice on how to get a dell powerconnect 6248 to have a steady connection over fiber to hp procurve 2920
Current setup:
Vlan 2 data 192.168.0-1.x 255.255.252.0
Vlan 4 voip 192.168.4.x 255.255.252.0
Vlan 8 printer 192.168.8.x 255.255.255.0
Vlan 9 Security 192.168.9.x 255.255.255.0
Dell powerconnect 6248
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 2,4,8-9
Using GBIC Dell FLTF8519p3bnl-fc
HP procurve 2920
Vlan 2,4,8,9 tagged
Auto configuring speed
Using GBIC HP J4858C
I currently have this dell 6248 conected to a dell 6224 with no issues via fiber.
When i tried to connect the 6248 to the 2920 via the gbics listed there was no connection until i disabled the port on the dell and reinabled however i was loosing a packet or 2 intermittently and it was causing serious network issues since the 6248 is our main switch to all our vmhosts and the 2920 is our only connection to the sonicwall/internet.
Should i be putting the procurve in trunked?
Should i put the powerconnect in general tagged?
Should i set the speed to manuall 1000full on the dell and if so hp has 1000fx is that the same speed?
Does anyone have advice on optomizing this setup with advanced switch features i know nothing about?

Re: Trouble with GBIC's
Personally, I would want to look at the switch logs (increase logging to info level so you get everything)
- when you insert the transceiver
- when you enable the link to the Dell
- while traffic is flowing
There could be some clues there.
Then, I would want to know what the interface statistics were showing on both ends, after traffic is flowing.
Any logs/stats from the Dell would also be useful.

Re: Trouble with GBIC's
Always use auto unless auto-negotiation actually fails.
Auto is part of the IEEE standard for 1Gb, so if disabling auto actually solves any issue, then you would need to get back to the vendor about their equipment being non-IEEE compliant.
Auto is the only option for 10Gb.
