VLAN creation by PCM+

Hi,

Another query... maybe I am getting this completely wrong but I feel like I am being misled a little by the PCM+ GUI...

If I go to create a VLAN, lets go with the example that I have a access device like a 2610 which is connected to a 5400... Now I create the VLAN on both devices, and tag the ports as necessary... PCM+ shows the VLAN created on both devices with an IP address on the 5400 only (Defining the gateway of the VLAN/Subnet), the 2610 shows the IP address as disabled because there is no IP configured on this device for the VLAN... however when I look at the help of PCM+ it states the following:

Disabled - DIsable IP and there is no access to management and TELNET. This option is NOT  recommended.

Does this mean HP expects me to allocate a VLAN IP address for every device on the VLAN? This seems like a waste of IP's??

Re: VLAN creation by PCM+

Hi there

No, HP doesn't expect that :)

This simply means that if you don't configure IP address say for example on VLAN 10, you won't for obvious reasons be able to connect to the switch IP management interfaces (Web GUI, Telnet, SSH) through VLAN 10. In fact you don't have to give a switch an IP address on any VLAN... but this would mean that your only configuration interface is the CLI through a console connection. So it's advisable to configure one VLAN with an IP address just for management purposes.
