VLAN tagging and EVPL.

Hi all-

My organization is implementing an EVPL from one of our branch offices to our datacenter.

Here is what it looks like on our network from end to end.

SITE A -- ProCurve 5400zl -- ISP Router --------------- EVPL --------------- ISP Router -- ProCurve 5400zl --SITE B

My question is this: We are running multiple VLANs on the 5400zl switches at each end. Do I just need to create a matching VLAN on both switches and enable VLAN tagging on all of the ports within?  From what I have read, this seems like the path of least resistance. Will this interfere with existing VLANs?

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

Re: VLAN tagging and EVPL.

Hi PvtDonkey,

I've not used EVPL myself, but it appears from a quick search that EVPL endpoints are expected to either filter most L2 protocols or peer with them.  In other words, act like a managed switch.  Therefore, if you were using native EVPL, you would need to check with your provider to ensure that they pass through VLAN tags appropriately.

However, you've got two routers in the path between your two switches.  Unless they're not really routers or they're configured in bridging mode, it's very unlikely that your ISP is presenting a L2 connection.  It's more likely that you will have to use different VLANs on each site, and configure routing on your 5400s.  But you should clarify this with your ISP to be sure.
