do two vrrp members need to be directly connected to each other to run vrrp?

I've never done it that way, but I would think that VRRP should work fine this way.

 

Having said that, you would want a very good reason for using an intermediate device...

So its not a requirement of vrrp?
I wondered if it's needed in order for the members to communicate with one another.

I would say that the two vlan interfaces that are on the same subnet and doing VRRP together just need to be on the same broadcast segment, so that can go through another Layer2 switch - as long as the VLAN is trunked through correctly, VRRP should work.
