Which ProCurve switches support inter-VLAN routing?
Hi guys,
I am not really a pro networking guy but have just inherited a new IT environment and currently tasked with all things of an "IT nature" :). We have done some auditing and have come across about 25 different models of switch (About half of which are HP). I need to identify which model supports inter-VLAN routing and also how many VLANs each model can support if any. Of course, I'm being slightly lazy here with the research but as I'm pushed for time I'm hoping someone familiar with HP switches can quickly share the answers with me and also help me understand if there is a quick method/rule of determining the above facts myself without having to scrawl through a hundred PDFs!
The models:
HP ProCurve 2510-48 (J9020A)
HP ProCurve 2610-48PWR
HP Procurve 2520G-24
HP 4104GL
HP 1800-24G
HP Procurve 5412-2L (J8698A)
HP ProCurve 2910AL-48G
HP Procurve 1400 – 24G – J9078A
HP 8226
HP 2650
HP 2824
HP 2450
HP 2610-48
HP 2620
HP 2824
Probably a silly question but is "inter-VLAN routing" the same as "Layer-3 RIP Support"?
Many thanks.

Re: Which ProCurve switches support inter-VLAN routing?
You just do a quick google for each switch model and the word "layer 3" or "layer 2".
If it's a Layer 3 switch, it supports inter-VLAN routing. If it supports RIP routing, it supports inter-VLAN routing.
If it's just Layer 2, it will support a large number of VLANs.
Your network doesn't need a whole bunch of switches that support inter-VLAN routing - you only need that at your core and distribution.

Re: Which ProCurve switches support inter-VLAN routing?
Hi NadimAJ747,
It's definitely a bit tricky working all that out. Here's what i know about their routing:
- no routing: 14xx (unmanaged), 18xx (web-managed; throw them away!), 24xx, 25xx, 41xx
- maybe no routing: 2610, 2620 - i'm not sure about these
- basic routing: 2650 (might include RIP?), 2824, 29xx (incl. RIP)
- static, RIP, OSPF: 54xx, 82xx - may require a license depending on when it was purchased
RIP is a very old dynamic routing protocol - don't use it unless you really have to. I would recommend restricting your use of routing to the 5400/8200 series, and maybe the 2824/29xx if necessary due to topology constraints.
Hope that all makes sense. Good luck!
Paul

Re: Which ProCurve switches support inter-VLAN routing?
Hi,
Very useful document if you need an overview of the features supported by the different switches.
http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02694321/c02694321.pdf
Go to Unicast Routing -->IP to find out which switches support routing.
The table doesnt include the most recent models.
Other option is the switch selector
http://pro-networking-h17007.external.hp.com/us/en/products/switches/selector/index.aspx
You can chose here diffent options in the sector Routing/Switching.
Layer 2 only -no routing
Layer 3 lite - routing between directly connected VLANs and static routes
Layer 3 RIP -routing between directly connected VLANs, static routes and dynamic routing via RIP
Layer 3 Advanced - all of the above plus OSPF, VRRP, BGP, IS-IS usw.
