Day's of Service | 2023
Here at HPE, we believe in giving back. Across all our GEOs we partake in “Days of Service” where we take time out of our calendar to volunteer a few hours of our time to a charity of our choice. In addition to this, the hours they log will convert to a monetary balance on our HPE Gives page where employees can then donate their balance to another charity or cause of their choice on the site. We are proud to be showcasing some of the charities we have helped this tear across the globe.
South Africa’s Day of Service:
The interns in South Africa took on their Day of Service at the Village Safe Haven in Buccleuch on August 2nd. This safe haven is a home for orphans and neglected children aged 0-18.This home can accommodate up to 34 children, but they are only housing 16 at this current time.
During the day of service volunteers ran an "office drive", where they collected dry foods, toiletries, blankets, and clothes. In addition to this, they were able to purchase a variety of useful products, thanks to the funding received from the early careers team. The interns’ favourite purchase was the washing machine, as they believe this is an ultimate need for the home which will be timelessly useful for the safe haven.
Five early careers members were able to drop off the collected goods and the washing machine to the safe house. Additionally, they were also able to spend some time at the home to help tidy and clean-up, as well as prepare the kitchen for lunch time.
Overall, the interns in South Africa had an incredible day, and have big plans for their next day of service".
UK’s day of service:
We would also like to showcase the UKI-wide Day of service, which took place on September 22nd, where 300 team member took part, and over 20 charities were supported.
In the heart of Homerton, London, Core Landscapes saw 15 HPE volunteers help with various gardening tasks such as cutting hedges, repotting plants, rearranging flower beds, digging pathways, and more. The day ran from 10am to 3pm, with pizzas provided and luckily some very sunny weather. There was very positive feedback from all the volunteers involved, with one saying they had an “amazing experience at Core Landscapes today. Briefing was very informative, and tasks ranged from easy to difficult. Would definitely recommend and return”.
Another group of around 10 volunteers were able to help at the First Days Children’s Charity in Wokingham. First days is a children charity that has set up a school uniform and baby clothes "shop" where families who are unable to purchase such items can come and acquire what they need free of charge. The charity believes that all children and new parents should be able to experience the excitement of going shopping for new school uniform and baby clothes, which is why they set up the charity.
The group of HPE volunteers sorted through the stock in the warehouse and took it over to the First Days building. Here they were able to arrange the school uniforms for customers to browse through, as well as sort out the baby section with toys, clothes, and hygienic product to ensure that it is easy for parents to find and pick up what they need. The volunteers found their day of service greatly fulfilling and enjoyed seeing everyone work as a team to help support families who are facing hardships.
This Global Day of Service was a great success, and we all look forwards to many more to come!
