HPE and Red Bull Racing Honda in Formula 1
This post is the first in a series where I will be discussing some of the areas where HPE and Red Bull Racing Honda work together, both at the track and away from it. As I publish a new article, I will update this post to link to it, so keep checking back!
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, where 20 drivers from 10 teams compete at 23 race tracks around the globe every season. The drivers are supreme athletes, driving at speeds in excess of 220 mph (354 kph) and experiencing forces of over 5G sideways in fast corners. To put that force into context, it is equivalent of lifting a 35kg (77lbs) weight with just your neck. The cars themselves are highly complex and contain hundreds of design updates from race to race.
The 2021 Formula 1 season is now upon us and Red Bull Racing Honda with Hewlett Packard Enterprise hit the track together in Bahrain for the first race. This marks the end of the winter โbreakโ and pre-season prep period at the Red Bull Technology Campus in Milton Keynes, England, which has been a hive of activity designing and building the 2021 car, the RB16B.
2021 marks the 6th year of the HPE and Red Bull Racing Honda Innovation Partnership. From initially being a core IT infrastructure provider at the Red Bull Racing Honda headquarters, HPE technology is now leveraged by the team from initial car component design all the way through to track side operations during each race weekend. We are a meeting of minds, committing to winning races and sharing a hunger for victory on track. To paraphrase a common statement from HPE CEO Antonio Neri, HPE is a company with a bias towards partnership and the Red Bull Racing Honda Innovation Partnership is a fantastic example of our approach.
In this series I will explore topics including how we accelerate computational fluid dynamics design work with HPE Apollo, enable high speed data capture at the wind tunnel with HPE Nimble and power rapid data processing at the track with HPE SimpliVity. To quote Red Bull Racing Honda Team Principal, Christian Horner, the HPE partnership brings โthe cutting edge of technology in a highly technical, highly stressed environmentโ to the team with the perfect โmarriage between creativity and dataโ to solve the complex challenge of regularly winning in Formula 1.
I hope in this series to show you just a small glimpse of what itโs like to work with a Formula 1 team at the sharp end of the grid through a few exciting examples from the breadth of our partnership.
