Why universities are looking to HPE GreenLake for a modern cloud
A drive to modernise cloud technology and push ahead with digital transformation is causing universities and other higher education providers across the UK to look to new and innovative solutions. Redefining what cloud looks like, HPE GreenLake has now been adopted by many universities, providing a flexible and adaptable cloud solution. Encouraging a โconsciously hybridโ approach, HPE GreenLake provides a single, open platform, offering a consistent experience across all clouds, whether public or on-premises. This simple approach and ease of access is an ideal fit for higher education providers looking to enhance performance whilst benefiting from cost and efficiency savings. HPE GreenLake also simplifies procurement, making it easy to expand your on-site infrastructure under one contract, rather than being tied to repetitive procurement cycles.
Just like each of our customers, our HPE GreenLake solutions are unique, tailored to their needs to meet critical objectives, whether thatโs cost savings, security requirements or sustainability goals.
Reducing costs and increasing sustainability for Royal Holloway University of London
Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL) needed an innovative and consciously hybrid solution, keeping data and workloads where they operate best whilst addressing their business objectives including reducing costs and increasing sustainability. With no upfront charges and defined costs making it easy to budget, HPE GreenLake delivered simplicity, flexibility, sustainability and streamlined management. RHUL reduced their data centre footprint by 75% and achieved energy savings of 72%, dramatically cutting costs and contributing to their carbon reduction goals. Additionally, they took advantage of HPEโs tech renewal service, using HPE to decommission and clear their legacy tech, then recycle it efficiently, with any residual value paid back to RHUL.
Sustainability is a key factor in cloud transformation, at HPE we recycle around 90% of the tech we put through our renewal centre. We also ensure that any revenue created by the sale of the old tech goes straight back to our customers, funding their new projects whilst diverting waste from landfill.

Focusing on security with the University of Stirling
Cloud migration can be a pressured activity, ensuring data is kept secure and accessible throughout the process. The University of Stirling was looking for an innovative cloud solution that would allow them to securely store their sensitive data within an agile, high-performance system, whilst aligning with their digital transformation and cloud strategy.
With a consciously hybrid approach, they were able to seamlessly transition their cloud, keeping the applications they needed on-premises, and migrating appropriate services to the public cloud. With a restriction on the types of data that can be stored in public cloud, this hybrid approach, using HPE GreenLake for optimal access, ensured research data was kept secure and within legal constraints.
Jim McKee, Head of Infrastructure at Stirling University concluded, โThere has been quite a difference between what we have today and the architecture we were used to. Performance has been transformed, capital expenditure has significantly improved, and we have a system that can evolve alongside our changing needs.โ
