Advanced EVA documentation

Hi everyone

Does anyone know where I can find some more advanced documentation on EVA architecture and how it works at a lower level than the documentation which is available from HP on the general site. I've been working with the EVA 5000 for about 3 years and I've read all the documentation which is readily available on the HP Site, eg EVA Design guide, Best practices etc. However, i really want some more in depth documentation but there doesn't seem to be anymore avenues other than a HP course (which i can't afford) or this forum. Does anyone know where i can find this info? HP course materials for example?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The real good documents are the student guide for the Eva Service and Support course. But you won't get this document for free, you must take the course.

Re: Advanced EVA documentation

Here's the overview of the HP EVA Course I went on. It doesn't go into huge amounts of depth and if I remember was more overview of infrastructure, each component , navigating Command View, CA and a bit of troubleshooting.

What kind of information are you after ?

Re: Advanced EVA documentation

Thanks for info guys. I appreciate that you need to go on the course for the info but at ├В┬г3000 , how many people can afford that?

The kind of stuff i want to iknow is for example, what are the roles of the controllers? How do they work and what are they doing? I know that most of the EVA config is stored on the disks and i have heard mention of quorum disks within the EVA where this config is stored etc. I just find that now, i know all the high level details about concepts like RSS, levelling and best practices for disk arrangement etc but how does one progress from that knowledge?

Honestly, I don't think you need to, unless you are doing break-fix (restricted to HP and a very limited number of external partners, which do need training and certification anyway) or product development work.

This stuff is highly complicated - I've been told second-hand that there is a dedicated engineer per single controller port, for example.

I have been working with the EVA since version 1 (in fact, I have seen an engineering sample at a customer site before the EVA was officially announced, although I don't count that as experience ;-), but there are too many details in the box too learn and they are irrelevant for *my* business, although I do install EVA systems.
For example, if something breaks I try some minimal diagnostic and then call HP for help to send me a person that is experienced in break fix / troubleshooting the EVA.

Re: Advanced EVA documentation

I recommend the following white papers from the HP Enterprise Library.

Performance analysis of the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array storage systems using HP StorageWorks Command View EVAPerf

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/downloads/HPStorageWorksCommandViewEVAPerf.pdf

Very detailed technical description of performance analysis strategy with EVA systems.

HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) online controller firmware upgrades white paper

Some case studies and in general interesting EVA technical discussion.

Re: Advanced EVA documentation

You can find some documentation on:

http://www.docs.hp.com/

and

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodClassId=-1&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=470490

I do not know if it suits your purpose, but take a look anyway.

Re: Advanced EVA documentation

Hi,

If you have access / hp accreditation you could look here:

http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plm/

Training in the UK for EVA's can be found here:
http://www.hostcomputers.co.uk/index.html
The course that may be of interest to you is ELMS2168 that covers 3/5K EVA systems.
Current price on website is ├В┬г1995+VAT.

Some tools available for t/s EVA's are also HP internal so you may not have access to them even if you know how to use them.
