Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

Hi all,

we´ve a MSA 1000 with two SAN Switch 2/8.
I have changed the password for the "admin" and the "user" account via copy and paste in the webtool of the switch.
Somehow or other, the passwords didn´t work anymore...
I´ve resetted the pwd in the CLI by login in with the root acount and changing the adminpassword (passwd "admin"), works fine. But when I try to change the password for "user" the CLI tolds me that the account doesn´t exist. How can I reset the password for "user" or whats the command for a list of users applied to the switch?

I hope someone can help me out of this... :O(

Thanks a lot
Sebastian

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

As far I know, the switch uses Linux operating system, and you can logon as root. Use root/password as the login name and password (unless you have changed the default password for root), and verify the contents of the /etc/passwd file. You should be able to run passwd username if the user is listed in the file.

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

This sounds to be a good idea to verify if the user is applied to the switch. I will check this tommorow morning.
I thougt that there must also be a possibilty to do the initial switch setup again, means the first configuration with factory settings, assigning new passwords to all useraccounts and so on. How can I perform such a factory reset, if nothing else will fix my problem?

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

You may try the configDefault command:

help configdefault
NAME
configDefault - Restore system configuration to defaults

SYNOPSIS
configDefault

AVAILABILITY
admin

DESCRIPTION
This command resets some of the system configuration values to their factory defaults.

This command may not be executed on an enabled system; you must first disable the system using the switchDisable command.

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

I thought the SAN switch 2/8 uses V2.x firmware and that is based on "VxWorks".

Please don't do a "configDefault" unless you have the required upload file which contains HP specific parameters.

HP has made available those files for many switches, e.g.:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=315094&prodNameId=315099&swEnvOID=54&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-38460-1

but it looks like they have forgotten the MSA SAN switch 2/8 :-(

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

The MSA 2/8 uses 3.x firmware, which is still based on VxWorks I believe, but definitely not Linux.

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

The switches run with actual v3.2.1 firmware.

And the defaultconfig command didn´t help. Userames and passwords remained, unless i´ve done something wrong.

I´m very confused about that situation...

Is there no way for a "hard reset" of the switch?

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

There is probably a way to do it during the boot sequence, but I do not have access to a switch to check into it. During the bootup, the serial port can be used to access a pre-boot environment... a place where passwords can be defaulted and such according to Brocade.

There is probably a command subset there and perhaps one of them is to restore factory settings.

You can also try calling HP and claiming that you have an issue and you want the switch replaced. Technically, you do have an issue.

Also, I don't remember there being a "user" account in 3.x or earlier, though I could be wrong. The newer Linux based switches have"admin", "user", "factory" and one other.

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

Hi Steven,

I have some options during the boot process but I can´t find one to reset to defaults.
Unfortunately it´s not possible for me to access the switch at the moment, so that I could have a look. I will write down the bootup options tomorrow morning...

At firts startup I`ve configured passwords for admin, root, factory and user, so I think the account must exist, especially as "user" is shown in the webtool.

Re: Change password on SAN Switch 2/8

Even the old (pre-Linux) Brocade SAN Switches had a "passwd" command. It will ask for a new password for each username (admin, etc) it knows about. It *should* have both "admin" and "user".
