Config StorageWorks e1200-160 on EVA

Is there some clear-cut documentation (not the standard User Guide), that advises on how to get an EVA SAN to see the e1200-160 and the Tape Drives it controls?

Hi,
Could you please give some more details. Are you trying to do some kind of direct (serverless) backup solution. And do you have any application (for ex. Data Protector) that support Serverless Backup.

To make the library visible from the SAN you need to configure a map in the e1200, the easiest is to set default map to "Auto Assigned".

Re: Config StorageWorks e1200-160 on EVA

Sorry for the lack of info. Here's the scenario:
MSL5026 w/e1200-160 Router attached straight to an EVA SAN via fiber connection to a 16-port HP switch. Yes, I want to attempt serverless or LAN-free backup. I also have several servers attached to the SAN, one of them has Veritas' NetBackup DataCenter applications installed on it. Hope that is enough info. If not, please let me know what else is needed.
Thanks!

Hi,

Of course you first have to configure zoning to work proper. I don't know which type of zoning you use but there must be one zone including the EVA, the e1200 and the backup server.

Then you have to log in to the storage router using a web browser. From the main menu, select Mapping. If you not have changed the default password you should use "root/password".

Set Default map to "Auto assigned".

This is all configuration that is necessary with the e1200. The rest of the configuration is in Netbackup (which I know nothing about).

"I want to attempt serverless or LAN-free backup."
Which one do you want to do? They're not the same. LAN-free backup is when each host backs up over the SAN to the backup device. Serverless backup is when the disk array performs the backup straight to the backup device (eg tape drive) without involving the host.
I will assume you want to do the former; LAN-free backup. In that case, you should not bother about making the EVA see the e1200 tape router. In fact, I'd advice against it. I've seen bad things happen with earlier models of tape routers and storage in the same zone.
There is no need for them to see each other, since the data flows through the host. The host needs to be in two zones though; one for the EVA and one for the e1200.

If on the other hand you actually do want to do serverless backup, and have the necessary software, I can't really advise.
