describe WWN and WWP


Hi all,

please tell me the difference between WWn(world wide number) and WWP (world wide port number ) of the node or server or both are same only just different names and clarify me that wwn or wwp associate or belonges to port of the server and attach to fiber channel switch port, is it right.thanks a lot in advance

The world wide name (WWN) is a unique name for SAN devices. A node (e.g. a HBA) has a node name and 1 or more port names, one for each port.

Dear torsten,

thank you for quick response.but this HBA on the server which is assigned a port no that is called WWP , is it right or not ?.and fiber cable connected to HBA from fiber switch and to SAN ports and thats port numbers are called wwn.and how many HBA cards can we have.?.thanks again.i am new to storage technology.

As said in the link above, the WWN is the equivalent of the MAC address of a NIC, "built-in" into the HBA.
