Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hello,
just want to doublecheck what the correct Procedure is for a Disk Drive in an EVA8000 which is imminent to fail but green at the moment.

1.Ungroup Disk in Command View or SSSu and wait for levelling
2.Remove Disk in Command View Eva
3.Take the failed HDD out
4.Put new HDD in same slot
5.wait for a minute until Disk is recognized
6.Group Disk again
7.Done :)

Are above Steps correct? Since this is our first Disk which is going to fail i wonder to be extra sure.

Thanks for your replies.

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hi Ludi,

All the steps are correct, however I would add one extra step in between steps 5 and 6, and that is to update the disk firmware. This will ensure that you are running a consistent level of firmware across all your disks in the array.

Also, unless HP are telling you to ungroup the disk, I would wait for the array to fail the disk itself.

And if your array is brand new, I assume that it is under warranty and you should in general be able to have HP come on site at no additional cost. That way they can assist in replacing this first disk with you to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hi,
Yes, your procedure looks fine. In addition I would wait 2 mins between removal of old disk and insertion of new one as recommeded by HP. There is no need to install a disk blank [for airflow] for that time period.

When you ungroup the disk you may want to select "ungroup in background" or something like that as if you pick the other option then cmd vw will stick there until the ungroup cmd completes.

Unfortunately I doubt if HP will come and "hold your hand" for disk replacements [and certain other itms] on 4/6/8k's as this component is classed as a Customer Replaceable Unit [CRU] or Customer Serviceable Repair [CSR] - take your pick.

Check out this HP website for info & nice little video clips! Direct for EVA:

And for other things [including EVA]:

Just select the item and move along each box

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hi,
Yes, Owen is also correct about disk code load. Better / preferrable to do it before you put it in a disk group but depending on your version of cmd vw and XCS it can be done online.

To find out if you have a suitable online version of cmd vw/XCS just select the "code load" tab from the top level screen. If the next screen asks you if you wish to do a "controller" or "disk code" load then you have a online compatable version. If not you don't! If this is the case then you would be best to do it before you group the disk, otherwise you would need to ungroup it again before you can code load it.

NOTE: If you choose the disk code load online option and then carry on through to load the code, it will DO ALL the disks that require a code load - there is no option to select your "new" disk only.

EVA disk bundles are available from here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=3351789тМй=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=3302267&taskId=135

Alos note that if you are doing the code load manually that you select the correct MODEL number. DO NOT just go by the disk load rev number "HP03" etc as some disks have the same rev number but use different code.

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hey all,

thank you so much for your help.
HP called me yesterday that the Drive should be replaced and that they will send it over.

I checked the Drive in question and it shows still as being ok.

Thought that it would be better to replace it beforehand tonight so that it will be ok again for the next working day. I dont know what the performance impact will be since we have VM ESX Servers running there.

Didnt think of the Firmware thanks for the info although i hope that the Fw is ok.

Wonder what is better now in general, waiting for a drive to fail before replacing or be proactive when you see a Drive failure is imminent.

> Unfortunately I doubt if HP will come and "hold your hand"

Well, that depends on when the array was delivered or if there was a service uplift bought.

Oh, and I would make _very_ _very_ sure that I am not accidently trying to downgrade any disk firmware. I did it by accident (don't ask...) and the EVA4000 went down completely for several minutes.

I would change the disk drive before it fails completely. That way you have full RAID protection all the time.

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hi,
Two years is standard for 4/6/8k [as I am sure you will know] but I was under the impression that certain items will still be CSR/CRU anyway regardless of standard / uplift of contract. HP polled the customer base and the answer they got back was for them to be able to do more - hence more CSR/CRU items for second generation EVA.

Uwe, well I have to ask - what happened then!?!? and why did you do it??

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

I did not say anything about the warranty duration.
The assignment of some duties to the customer came in february and, as far as I know, older customers are still covered by the older rule. Of course, if somebody is confident to swap disk himself, I doubt that the dispatcher will send a technican anyway.

Like I said: the array went down completely. It stopped listening to CV. All fault LEDs went on. I'll attach a photo of the OCP.

Why I did it? It was an accident! I must have mis-read the firmware version!
I am glad the system was not in production use.

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Hi Uwe,
Thanks for that, I thought it was earlier than Feb 07, and ouch!

Re: Disk Replacement Procedure EVA8000

Thanks again for all your advise,
have also spoken to HP about this.
According to them you should always try to replace a drive before it actually fails!
That way you will have full protection like Uwe mentioned and do not take any risk.

Performance wise ungrouping a disk can be done during working hours without any Problems as well as adding a disk again afterwards.

As for the rest it was fine.
