EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

We have an EVA 4000 at VCS 6110 (latest version, I believe). I have recently installed 16 * 300GB 10K discs, detected by Command View EVA as BF300DA47B with Firmware Revision HP00, and am getting the error 06354d04 - "An unrecognized Fibre Channel physical disk drive firmware revision has been detected by the physical disk drive firmware load process."

According to the manuals this issue should be resolved before grouping the discs. I have applied the latest EVA Firmware bundle from the HP website, which does not have any updates for this disc. There are refernces in the Help to a "Superfile" update, but I cannot find anything else on this.

I am confused because the release notes for VCS6110 states support for BF300DA47B with Firmware Revision HP00, which is good. However, all literature describes BF300DA47B as a 15k spin speed 300GB disc (and Firmware starting BF seems to be always for 15k discs, and BD for 10k by convention). Externally the discs are labelled as 366023-001 10k, and this is the correct part number for 10k spin speed discs.

Given this discrepancy, I am reluctant to go ahead with adding these discs to the production group. My only theories are that

1- HP have just released a new Firmware type for this disc or
2 - these discs have somwhow got the wrong firmware - which does sound very unlikely!

Anybody got any advice?

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

Hi,
According to your information, this is your disk:
BD3005B779 359438-010 HP01 364622-B23 366023-001 Not listed 300GB 1", 10K RPM FC 40 Pin 2GBit, so the correct drive model is
BD3005B779 and the firmware to it is HP01. For the unknown reasons EVA is detecting it as BF300DA47B 404395-003 HP00 AE124A/AE054A 416728-001 Not listed 300GB FC, 15K.
There are some rolling upgrades at some 10K models to the HP02 and some 15K models to the HP03. To clear you issue contact the HP local support with these information

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

HP part numbers are never the easiest things to identify - there arppear to be at least 4 possible numbers for any one component!

I will be contacting HP support on Monday and will update the forum with any progress

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

Hi,
and the main points are the following:
a) the CVE is badly detecting your disk
b) there are ongoing rolling upgrade at the moment but your disk is not listed there, so maybe the newest information has not been yet documented
the pain is one part of the reality

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

Hi, maybe the missing word firmware is important :-), therefore to be absolutely sure i am inserting the expression of the rolling upgrades above - there are firmware rolling upgrades for the selected 10k/15k disks at the moment :-).
the pain is one part of the reality

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

Hi,

Did HP support advise why "An unrecognized Fibre Channel physical disk drive firmware revision has been detected by the physical disk drive firmware load process." was being logged?

THanks

Re: EVA 4000 FC 300GB Disc Firmware Issue

HP support resolved this. We already knew about the fact that newer recent disc firmware was not recognised by the EVA VCS software. Apparently HP have changed disc suppliers, and are not at the moment supplying 10k spin speed discs. If you order a 10k disc, then you get something with the 10k part number on the box and the disc enclosure itself (and presumably on the price tag), but inside it is a 15k spin speed disc.
