EVA restarting conrtoller

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

Probable that the the 2 HSV COntrollers are on slave mode. Restart the other controller.

We also have this problem even at the VCS/Command View Releases you mentioned.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

What is this slave mode ?

This status stays (system is not accessible from Command View) until I restart the Appliance.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

Usually one controller is the master, the other is the 'slave'. You can also try a re-discovery or just restart 'Command View EVA' from the "manage tools" menu instead of rebooting the whole SMA.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

There is still a "problem" with the EVAs that sometimes both controllers would just operate in slave mode.. Command View only communicates qith the "Master".

I cannot recall how to find out exactly how to find out the current "mode" of your HSV controllers but I strongly suspect that's where you are -- both your HSV controllers are operating as "slaves" -- not detrimental to the connected servers but affects your CommandView operations.

So what shall I do?
How to check if there is a master or 2 slaves?
How to change a controller to master status ?

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

The solution on our end is to reboot the controllers one after the other and also reboot the Appliance.

Have you at all approached HP Support? I'd be interested in what they will recommend.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

You can determine which HSV110 controller is the master from the front panel. Reference the EVA user guide for the key sequence, I believe it is under the information section, then under firmware, the display will show VCS 3020 Master or VCS 3020 Slave.

Some notes...
- which ever EVA/HSV controller starts up first will be the Master.
- the SAN appliance only communicates with the Master controller.
- some SAN appliances only have one fibre HBA therefore they can only communicate with one controller.
- sometimes you must reboot the SAN appliance to re-establish communication with the EVA.

The SMA-I has two single-port fibre channel adapters. I haven't seen an SMA-II, but according to the specifications it comes with two single-port adapters, too. The SMA-III has a single adapter, but with two ports.

In most cases an EVA is connected to two different fabrics. In that case one would connect one port of each controller to the same fabric and set up zoning correctly so that the SMA has access to both controllers.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

I have found that Command View EVA often does a poor job keeping track of what happens to the HSVs, particularly when adding/removing disks. Whenever the picture looks bad, I now just restart Command View and often the picture is clearer. If it isn't, then I know I have a real issue.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

Hi,

Check also on your san appliance with hbanyware (start-programs..) whether your link is up. Also check your sanswitches and do a NSshow on both to see if all your controller hostports are logged in. I have seen situations where a switch needed a reboot to make the EVA visible for the san appliance.

Re: EVA restarting conrtoller

A switch reboot is a bit hard - I suggest you disable/enable the EVA's ports so that the SNS gets updated - has worked fine for me so far.
