HSG80 Controller

Hi,

I have a problem with an HSG80 controller and a modular storage array 8000. We had two drives fail in our raid set, when we came to replacing the drives we cannot gain access to the command console. The HSG80 controller reset button light flashes, and none of the other 6 lights light at all, nothing is logged to the maintenace console port. When I remove the program PCMCIA card the reset light remain steady green, but still nothing is logged to the maintenance port. I have powered the unit on whilst holding down the reset button, and tried to reset by holding down the reset whilst inserting the program pcmica card but still get nothing on the console port. I have tried using hyperterminal on more than one machine at various baud rates with no sucess.

Any help with this one would be much appreaciated.

Re: HSG80 Controller

Firstly I'd suggest using a direct connection into the maintenance port of the HSG80 rather than using SWCC, this way you will see any errors occurring on the console, your also not relying on the SWCC connection through to the HSG.
The heartbeat LED on the controller (reset button) should be flashing green when the controller is healthy, the normal status of the six port LEDs would be off, if however you have a failed disk on one of these ports then you would expect that port to have a solid LED on it.
Removing the ACS card will crash the controller, you will not see anything displayed on the console when you do this as the controller dies, the FMU log will indicate the PCMCIA card has been removed though.
The default settings for the console port is 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. You can change the baud rate from the controller console though.
Occasionally the maintenance port can lock up, a restart of the controller usually clears that condition, if you're still not able to connect then ensure you have the correct cabling. There is a cable available (70-32873-02) or you could make one.
If you still cannot connect then this may suggest a faulty maintenance port although this is very rare, you'd need to contact your service provider.

I'm assuming you only have a single HSG80 controller here, if you've got dual controllers then obviously try connected to the other controllers maintenance port.

Re: HSG80 Controller

It was with hyperterminal that I was trying to make a connection, I tried various baudrates incase the settings had been changed but assumed it should still be 9600,n,8,1. There is just nothing logged ever to the port. The cable is the original one that was supplied with the unit. Does anyone have the pinouts so that I could make/test the cable?. Unfortunatley the unit does only have one HSg80 controller and I don't have a spare to cross test it with.

Thanks for your help so far.

Re: HSG80 Controller

Jon - were you able to find the pinouts for the hsg80 controller console cable ?

If you did get them, could you forward them to me ?

thanks,

Re: HSG80 Controller

Jonathan:

Removing the PCMCI card is not a desired first troubleshooting method.

When you press and release the reset button, do you get all the lights traveling across the 6 LEDS several times? Or do you not get anything when you press the reset button?

If your lights are correct, then I would try the console port next. You could possibly have a failed console port on the controller.

If you are not getting any of the other LEDS lit at all, that would indicate somethign wrong with the controller itself. Normally a couple of the LEDS will light to indicate the source of the problem.

I don't suppose that you have this equipment still under warranty or on maintenance where you can log a service call.

Hello, it is also possible that you have any corruption on the PCMCIA OCF, try to replace with other with the same OCF version.
