Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

Within the Brocade FOS you can configure SNMP and email alerts. So start with the Brocade itself.

Yep. Additionally, if you have HP SIM installed somewhere, you can have those alerts go to SIM and SIm can push out e-mails and stuff.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

Hi,
As far as I can remember you could monitor switches using ISEE.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

Not exactly with ISEE, but with it's partner programs, WEBES and OSEM.

Both of these program s talk(ed) backed to HP SIM and/or ISEE.

For a simple configuration where ISEE might not be installed... HP SIM should work.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

you were asking for a recommendation on a free tool. SIM (System Insight Manager) is a free tool.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

Even without a Fabric Watch license, you still get basic hardware monitoring through the Fabric Watch facility, which can send SNMP traps and email.

Brocade switches can send log messages to a syslog server. You could combine this with a program that monitors the syslog on the server.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

hi,
there is also the Cacti/Thomb tool, which allows you to continuously SNMP monitor (with the thresholds) all the switches and have it all in graphs and online...
the pain is one part of the reality

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

So it means that there is functionality in the switch os itself that can send out mail if f.ex a power supply fail. Or do I need a tool to pick up info from the switch and this tool will send out a mail.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

The switch can send email by itself. You will need to configure DNS and possibly a mail gateway.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

Is it possible to sort which messages the switch should forward? The customer probably do not want a lot of informational messages.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

These can be tuned in Fabric Watch. Check the Fabric Watch and Admin guides for your version of FabricOS.

Re: Monitoring Brocade san switches

hi,

if you are monitoring a number of these and you wish to have much more control over the events and alerts that are sent out - i would suggest as have others here that you look at HP SIM or IBM DIRECTOR depending whether your customer has a preference, both are free and can be used to monitor most infrastructure elements (servers, storage systems etc).
this would centralize and simplify management of these switches.
