msa 1500cs hardware upgrade

Here's a newb question for you. I need to install two more scsi controllers in an MSA 1500cs. Is it possible to do this without taking the SAN down completely? I wanted to verify that these things are .. hot swap capable before I slap them in the thing.

Thanks for the help!

Re: msa 1500cs hardware upgrade

In an MSA1500cs controller shelf the only hot swappable components are the controller (when in redundant configuration), FC I/O Module (when in redundant configuration), the fans and the power supplies.

The SCSI controllers are NOT hot swappable.

Once it's in production it's all bugs after that.

Re: msa 1500cs hardware upgrade

I might be using incorrect terminology in explaining the hardware I want to install. What I am installing is the MSA1500 Dual Channel SCSI I/O Module (AA988A). Is that device hot swapable?

Hi,

It is correct. This module is not Hot swap.

Re: msa 1500cs hardware upgrade

This presents a quandary.. I contacted HP support and they told me that the SCSI I/O module was in fact hot swappable.

I might call again and talk to someone else because the guy I spoke to this time didn't seem very well informed which is odd .. I usually have good luck with HP support.

zpetersen,

Anything with a maroon tab, can be hot added. But hot adding a disk shelf isn't supported.

Re: msa 1500cs hardware upgrade

Thanks John. I did some more searching and came across the documentation that in fact shows that you guys are correct.

I'm a bit miffed that I was given incorrect information by HP tech support. I even gave the guy the part number of the SCSI I/O card and he straight up told me that it was hot pluggable. I wish I would have taken down his name as this could have caused a huge problem...

Anyway, thanks to everyone who has replied to this.
