Procurve 2324 switch not accepting commands

We have 3 procurve 2324 switchs stacked, I am trying to check the configuration, when I connect through the console the only commands available are the software/version, download, exit commands. It will not accept anything else. There is no password or ip configured on the switch/s, and they are in production.
What am I doing wrong, if try other commands it say that its an "invalid input". Any ideas?

does it prompt for a password?

Sometimes there are different users and the password you type selects the user. A null password might select a user with limited capabilities.

NO it does not and there are no passwords set on the units. at the prompt after you connect it goes to the copyright info, states you are logged on to download console, and to press any key to continue...the prompt..

If you type anything it states: Invalid Entry. If I type help or ? for commands the only ones available are: Software, Download, Exit. Tried other commands with the same result.
