Replace server with MSA1500 connected

I have a ML570G2 with a 1500cs modular smart array, that connects direct a MSA1500 with 54 x 300GB. The server runs W2k.
The server is replaced with a DL380G7 running W2k3. The new server has StorageWorks FC1142SR 4Gb PCI-E HBA Windows installed.

What do I have to do to reconnect the storage to the new server? Can I just reconnect the fibers? The data may not get lost!

Re: Replace server with MSA1500 connected

Lex,

Absolute first thing I would do is backup the data to tape. After that I would make sure the DL380G7 has the firmware settings on the HBA set the same as the firmware settings on the HBA that is on the ML570G2. Specifically look at the fabric type and speed. Once that is done make sure you install the MSA1500cs and HBA drivers on the DL380G7. Then I would simply connect the MSA1500cs to the new server and see if it will bring up the storage. If it is direct connect there should not be any type of zoning or WWN issues to deal with. If that doesn't work then check back here.

Once it's in production it's all bugs after that.

Onsite we find a switch connected, the Storageworks SAN switch 2/8V. We installed Qlogic storport HBA driver and SANsurfer manager. Can I just reconnect the fibers from the old to the new servers?

Re: Replace server with MSA1500 connected

First check if you have activated SSP on the MSA. As the HBAs on the new server are different from the ones on the old server, you'll have to modify SSP so that the LUNs are visible by the new server.

Windows 2003 should not have problems reading a LUN created on Windows 2000. Check in Windows device manager that it sees the MSA controllers and the LUNs. Install MPIO on the server before presenting it any LUN.
