I have an MSL 6000 Library that needs to go into our SAN environment. My question is "How do I go about doing this?" Our Data Protector Cell Manager is currently not in the SAN.
Thanks
Joe

Re: SAN Library
The first step is to rack the library and cable it up properly.
how far along are you?
Do you have the 6030? or a 6060?
1 drive? 2? 4?
1 NSR? or 2 NSR's?
To cable the library up, you need to first determine how you want the Cell Manager to see all the devices. You will also need to install an HBA into the server and load up the drivers, connect to the SAN, modify zoning...
1 step at a time...

Re: SAN Library
information about your MSL (number of NSR), switches (zoning) and host systems (HP-UX/Windows) is important. Please tell us.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: SAN Library
configure the NSR like descripted on the sheet of paper delivered with the NSR/MSL box. If the mapping is configured, the drives and the robotics are presented to the SAN. Now it's up to you to configure zoning, but all servers are able to see them (depends on current zoning).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: SAN Library
Since you already have servers attached, I can assume that the device mappings are ok and they should be ok going forward. You may just need to assign the proper map to any new servers that you allow access via zoning.
Since the servers already have hba's, then there is a bit less to do then originally expected. (This assumes that the 2 originally attached servers are the Cell Manager and the Windows Box) Whats left.. is to connect all these devices to your SAN switch.
Now, depending on how you want to configure your EBS, you will have to re-configure your zoning. At the very minimum, your Cell Manager needs to see the library, so that should be one zone including the HBA in your HP-UX box and the 2 ports of the NSR.
Now, is the Windows server going to be a media server? or a SAN Media Server? or in any way going to need direct access to the drives? If so, you should create a second zone with the HBA of the Windows server, and the NSR's fibre ports.
Continue in this fashion until all the servers that NEED to see the library, can. OR... better yet, lets work on getting just 1 or 2 servers up and running first. You can always add others later if necessary.

Re: SAN Library
About Data Protector and SAN librarys.
The Cell Manager need not to be attached to the SAN. You can use any Client that has media agent inatalled and has library support. I would prefer a HP-UX or Windows client. Just follow the instructions in the Installation and Licensing guide and in the Admin guide.
