Re: Secure path concept
Although not mandatory, you will need it for path protection if you have more than one path to your disks on the SAN. It protects you against HBA and cable failures between your server and the SAN switch as well as between the SAN switch and the Array controllers. Additionally, you can set up SecurePath so it load balances IO (between your server and the switch AND controllers) amongst however many FC paths you have.
Note that SecurePath does the job of technologies like PVLINKs, AutoPath, Veritas DMP, etc...

Re: Secure path concept
In a SAN environment you could have 4 routes through to the storage live at any one time.
Without Secure Path you would then see the same storage represented 4 times.
In addition Secure Path provides the ability to load share across these channels as well as handling failover etc.

Re: Secure path concept
Secure Path is multi-path, high availability software that manages and maintains continuous data access to HP storage systems enabling no-single-point-of-failure (NSPoF) from server to storage.
Secure Path is host-resident software that monitors the data paths between server and storage to increase availability of information. In the event that a path failure is detected, Secure Path fails over to an alternative path. When that path becomes available, Secure Path can automatically fail back to the original path.
For Windows, Linux, SUN and HP-UX systems connected to the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array or the HGS80 storage controllers, Secure Path can dynamically balance the workload among available paths to optimize system performance. Secure Path on the NetWare and IBM-AIX platforms provide static workload balancing.
