Secure Path on server with one HBA

I´m going to add a server to an existing solution, but I only have one HBA to play with.
Is it supported to add a server with one port to a EVA5000 with a SAN Swith 16? And if it is, do I have to install Secure Path eventhough it just have one connection?

Thx,
Fr

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

it is supported with one FCA.

It does require zoning one port on the switch. (because you see 2 connections)

you dont need secure path.

more info is in the user manual.

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

Thanks.
If I add secure Path and still dont have more than one physical path to the switch, there will be no need for zooning?
Are there more advantages for purchasing secure path to a one path server?

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

You really wouldn't benefit from this product unless you planned on adding another HBA.

Have a look at this

Fredrick:

Because the EVA has 2 paths to your SAN fabric, you must zone the system to see only one port. If you do not zone out the other port of the EVA, you will have 2 paths to your storage. (One through each controller)

Note: In case of a controller failure, you run the risk of loosing the single path to the storage for this server until you perform a zoning change.

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

Keep in mind that Zoning and Selective Storage Presentation are two seperate concepts that function at seperate hardware levels.

Zoning is the traffic cop that tells your SAN switches which server can see which storage controller(s) This operates within the SAN switches. It has nothing to do with programming the storage controllers themselves.

Selective storage presentation is used in the Storage controller to allow the established connections to access the appropriate LUNS that are being presented from that storage controller.

Thank you all.

I will zone and consider all your answers.

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

But, if he just adds SecurePath, it will handle the 2 controller paths and allow survival of a HSV controller failure.

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

Just adding secure path is very expensive option for limited extra redundancy

(provided he keeps 1 FCA)

Re: Secure Path on server with one HBA

Adding secure path is an expensive method in this case. Sooner or later I will get the second FCA and then they have to give me the money...

Thank you all for the answers.
