Secure Path Sun hba's

Do I have to buy hp/compaq branded hba's for them to be supported/work with Secure Path?? The compaq/hp branded hba's are rather expensive... I can't find any where if it says a list of supported hba's??? Help is appreciated.. We were thinking about lp10000's..

Thanks

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

Hi,

what storage system do you want to attach?
I've seen Solaris machines with Emulex HBA (LP98xx) working with EVA5000, but that was FSC PrimePower machines, not Sun.
Here's a link to the release Notes for SecurePath 3.0D for Solaris. It has a list of supported hardware.

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

I am connecting to an EVA5000. We have a 5000 and a 3000, in this case, we are connecting to the 5000 but it would be nice to know what will work for both.

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

Thanks for that link, it says,

DS-SWSA4-PC 32-bit PCI, single 1-Gbit ports, HBA driver
Version 2.6.13, Firmware Version 3.0.3
DS-SWSA4-SC 64-bit Sbus, single 1-Gbit ports, HBA driver
Version 2.6.13, Firmware Version 13.3.7
FCA2257S 64-bit Sbus, dual 1-Gbit ports, HBA driver Version
4.13.01, Firmware Version 2.2.6, F-Code Version 2.00.03
FCA2257C 64-bit cPCI, dual 1-Gbit ports, HBA driver Version
4.13.01, Firmware Version 2.2.6, F-Code Version 2.00.05
FCA2257P 64-bit PCI, single 2-Gbit port, HBA driver Version
4.13.01, Firmware Version 3.2.15, F-Code Version 2.00.05

So basically it is listing just the hp/compaq part number hba's... anyone have any luck with Sun or generic emulex hba's??

Thanks

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

I've been down this road. I have four V240 NFS servers connecting to an EVA5000 serving 20TB of data.

I tried to buy the HBA from SUN and also from a third party. After all, a qlogic HBA is just a qlogic HBA right? Wrong! HP changes the firmware on their qlogic HBA to be able to talk to the EVA.

So, I figure, I'll just flash the HBA with HP's firmware, available on the net.

It wouldn't work. Something in the firmware senses the HBA type and the flash doesn't complete. Smart engineers at HP... ;-).

So, I had to return the generic and SUN HBAs and buy the HBA directly from HP. Everything now works perfectly.

Bottom line... if you want to interface a SPARC/Solaris system to an EVA, you must buy the HBA from HP.

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

The FCA-cards I think are all JNI Cards (www.jni.com -- probly already a different DBA / acquired). The firmware is exactly the same even if the firmware says for HP array or HDS/Other array use. Even the software/driver is JNI.

Re: Secure Path Sun hba's

We bought Qlogic (Qlogic 2310F) from third pary
(with about half price), and they work just fine. You need install the HBA driver before
installing the SecurePath using install_sp came
with the package. Otherwise, the script would
tell you that no compatable device detected.

The HBA bought from SUN had some issue. I think
the HBAs bought from SUN have some special
firmware loaded for SUN's multiple path software (free for Solaris). I had to use the SUN HBAs for systems directly attached to 3511 array from SUN, in order to have the failover working.

BTW, we have EVA5000/EVA3000, and servers
are running Solaris 9.
