Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

I have a EVA 3000 SAN storage works. How do I find what patch version is running on it?

Hi,

I'm not sure what you mean by patch version.

If you mean the VCS version, that can be found through Command View EVA by clicking on the EVA icon.

Hope this helps,

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

I have just clicked on the EVA icon and all I can see under the System heading:-

Type: HSV100
Version: 3028

So the EVA 3000 is running on version 3028?

So the version relates to the firmware version not a patch version running on the HSV100 controllers?

Is this the latest firmware version running on HSV100 for a EVA 3000?

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

3028 is the version of VCS(Virtual Controller Software). This is the software for HSV100 controller which allows Command View EVA to talk to EVA. There is nothing like patch version that I know of.

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

Hi,

VCS 3028 is the latest stable Active/Passive release.

VCS 3110 is available, but not yet in general release.

VCS 4007 is also available which turns the EVA into an Active/Active configuration. Depending on your situation you probably don't want to go to that yet.

Bottom line, if you're running 3028 then you don't need to change at the moment.

Hope this helps,

What do you mean by Active/Passive?

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

Active/Passive means that only one of the two HSV100 controllers in your EVA3000 respond to I/O requests for any given Vdisk. You can load balance between the controllers using the "preferred path" mechanism. Any version of VCS starting with a '3' (or lower) is active/passive. Starting with VCS 4.xxx HP implemented active/active I/O wherein either controller may respond to any given I/O request. Active/active is inherently 'on' in the EVA4000/6000/8000 arrays, but in the EVA 3000/5000 family you may enable it by installing VCS 4.xxx. However - BEWARE - active/active may require cabling changes, multipath software changes in your servers, or other driver/firmware changes. You should not take the active/active path without a detailed analysis of your environment, and it would probably be a good idea to get HP involved, too.

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

So in our case are you saying that it is not esential to upgrade from 3028 to 4.xxx at all?

How can I verify the behaviour of the HSV100 controllers in the EVA 3000 is Active/Passive?

Not at all! It requires a very careful analysis of your current situation and planning before you change. I did a few migrations and it can be quite some work.

You would need to send SCSI inquiry commands across all paths of a single virtual disk and interpret the responses. But you wrote that your EVA is running VCS V3.028, so this _is_ A/P.

Re: Storage Works EVA 3000 patch version

Hi,

Do we need to look at the firmware version field in the standard inquiry to ascertain it is an A/P or do we need to look at any other byte in the inquiry response.

Thanks
