VA and Secure Manager...

I'm having a strange problem it seems with Secure Manager and my VA7100. I have two servers connected to the VA, there is no zoning on the switch.

I have two LUNs presented, 0 and 1. 0 is for server0 and 1 is for server1. When Secure Manager is disabled, both servers can see both LUNs. However if I enable Secure Manager, even with the relevant table entries of Config write for each hosts WWN and the relevant LUN, the first server can see it's LUN but the second server cannot see any of the LUNs.

I'm not sure what's causing this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Regards - Lee

Re: VA and Secure Manager...

Many operating systems use a SCSI-3 REPORT LUNs command against an array's LUN 0 to find out which LUNs they can access. This avoids a long polling time.

As the VA7xx0 does not present a pseudo device at LUN 0 (at least it did not when I looked at it some time ago), the following mechanism is used:
- create a small LUN (1MB or so) and present it to LUN address 0
- do NOT write a partition to it!!
- use Secure Manager to present LUN 0 to both servers
-- I beleive you have additional control using C,R access or so,
-- but off-hand I don't remember. Perhaps you
-- can consult the documentation or somebody
-- else can tell...
- create addition LUNs and present at higher addresses

Re: VA and Secure Manager...

All connected servers need access to LUN 0 - without they cannot find their other LUNs!

Configure a small LUN 0 and one LUN (1 and 2) for each servers data.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the answers, now you've mentioned it this rings a bell, as thinking about it I've seen other VAs we have setup like this.

Many Thanks - Lee
