VA7110 Proper Shutdown Procedure

Does anyone have a proper way to shutdown the VA7110 without being in a catch 22?

We have master and 2 jbods.

If we shutdown master and jobds, the servers hangs. If we shutdown servers, VA will get shutdown cold, which we don't want.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: VA7110 Proper Shutdown Procedure

See this link:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00311965/c00311965.pdf

page 36

"...
A shutdown is automatically initiated in two ways:
- By moving the power/standby switch to the standby position.
- Using the array management software.
..."

So you can shiutdown the host(s), switch off the array, wait for the shutdown, power off the JBODs.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: VA7110 Proper Shutdown Procedure

Leahi,

The way I recommend is to shutdown the servers, then the array(s) then the SAN. In the case of the VA array, you should shut down the master first, then the JBODs.

In summary, shut down in this order:
1) host(s)
2) master on VA
3) JBODs on VA
4) SAN switches

Just reverse the sequence for power up...

Cheers,

These are great instructions. Thank you.

If I shut down the host, do I need to access the master VA via console, or just pull the plug (press the power button)?

Re: VA7110 Proper Shutdown Procedure

You can shutdown the VA via the Command View software, but you cannot shut down the JBODs with that software. Therefore, I would do it in the data center. Use the front panel siwtch, not by pulling power cords.

Cheers,

Curt

PS Maybe spread a little points our way if this was a satisfactory answer ;)
