Re: waiting for first write
can you please ask the engineer(s) why the MSA does not start immediately with the parity construct / initial mirror copy?
I have always disliked that behaviour. With other storage arrays, I set them up first and then walk my way over the server(s). During that time, the storage array can proceed with the initial mirroring/ RAID-5/6 construct.

Re: waiting for first write
It's one of those business product rules we have to adhere to.
The intent was allow individuals to make changes to a LUN before any actual data gets written.

Re: waiting for first write
In Some cases it should be possible to check and configure the MSA without any Server.
Because we get the Hardware first and want to configure and test it, before shipping in to our customers.

Re: waiting for first write
You can configure the Array with the cli cable.
The LUN is still useable if you decide to test it with a server. Once any write occurs, PI will start.
