Re: What is wwid?

hi,

it is a unique id used for fibre cards.this is used for security for accessing storages, etc .

ie. if you are configuring a LUN with a (specific card) wwid , the server where that specific card is used can only access that LUN.

Re: What is wwid?

The WWID / WWN of a fibre channel adapter is a 64-bit number. Many HP storage arrays also provide a 128-bit 'LUN WWID / WWN' for each logical/virtual disk. Some operating systems use it to identify all paths to a single LUN.

Re: What is wwid?

The WWN or WWID in the Fibre Channel world is the same as the MAC address in the Etehrnet world.

Out of a digest:
World Wide Name.
A unique identifier assigned to a Fibre Channel device.

Re: What is wwid?

I understand the WWID concept and its use (similar to MAC addresses in networking). But what's the reason for the WWN? What's it used for? Why was it put in the spec? On our VMS systems I don't think I've ever used the "WWN" over the "WWID" when configuring our SAN. Thanks

Re: What is wwid?

I have not found a unique naming convention.

There are more acronyms like WWNN (world wide node name) or WWPN (world wide port name) that are also called 'WWN' or 'WWID'. Sometimes the person who uses WWN or WWID means the same thing.

WWN can also mean the 64-bit 'MAC-like address' in the adapter or the 128-bit 'extended address' to clearly identify a LUN in a fibre channel network.

(The 16-bit 'LUN ID', 'HOST ID' or 'UNIT IDENTIFIER' that is used to assign the unit number for an OpenVMS fibre channel 'disk' [as in $1$DGAunit:] is using a vendor-specific feature of the SCSI spec. - this is never called WWN / WWID).

It is best to talk about the environment to find out what is meant when somebody uses one of these acronyms.
