Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

Hi all

Hope this is not spam, I am trying to find a proper forum for my KGPSA issue...

I just found a bunch of these events on my server:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: CPQKGPSA
Event Category: None
Event ID: 15
Date: 08-April-2004
Time: 12:00:23 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVERNAME
Description:
The device, \Device\Scsi\CPQKGPSA1, is not ready for access yet.
Data:
0000: 0018150f 00720001 00000000 c004000f
0010: 00000103 c00000a3 00000228 00000000
0020: 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000000
0030: 00000002 00000000 00000007 00000005

All from within 60 seconds on 12:00:00 last night. The CPGKGPSA is an LP8000 patched into a SANswitch16 which is connected to an NSR 2402. All the tape devices still appear connected to the server and there have not been any apparent problems with the backup software - yet.

Any ideas? (Apart from check driver/firmware etc)

Thanks

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

It is likely going to be a driver problem.
What server is this? A Proliant?
WHat exact card flavor?

There are 2 flavors of KGPSA according to the website:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/kgpsa/index.html

"Both HBAs (P/N 176479-B21/DS-KGPSA-CB for Windows NT and P/N 168794-B21/DS-KGPSA-CA for Tru64 UNIX/OpenVMS) can be configured with the HP RA8000, ESA12000, HP 7- and 12-Port Fibre Channel Hubs, HP 8- and 16-Port Fibre Channel Switches (and Fibre Channel SAN Switches) and HP Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) offerings. They replace the Compaq PCI-to-Fibre Channel HBA (P/N# 380574-001/KGPSA-BC)."

Try a 'more options' search in this forum.
Ask for CPQKGPSA or "is not ready for access yet.". You'll find prior notes like:

At first glance there is no direct solution though!

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

It is a Proliant DL380 g2. I have the latest KGPSA driver 1.4.0 but not the latest KGPSA firmware installed as yet.

I quickly read over this, and my first question would be which Slot you installed the card ?

I recommend any slot other than the first or last on your bus.

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

I had the same issue reapply the driver and reboot. The current driver for the LP8000 is 5.4.82a.16, firmware is 3.82a1. Don't load the driver with LUPTILNT, only the firmware. also check your ResetTPRLO=1 in the registry.

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

This error could be caused by the Storage Agent. What version of Insight Management Agents are you running? Anything between 5.5 and 7.0 causes this, and even then...
Try disabling the the Fibre Array Information subagent. You do this through the Control Panel, Compaq/HP Management Agents. On the Services Tab, click on the FAI agent under the Active List, and click Remove. When you apply this, it will restart the agents and SNMP service.
Try this before ripping out your drivers or anything else more drastic.

Thanks for all replies

Randy -
Are you implying that it's an erroneous error? That there's nothing really wrong it's just something in the logs that I need to get rid of?

Thanks

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

No, this is actually a case of the management agent interfering with things. This is really an issue with an enterprise backup solution, with a FC connected shared library. I only suggest it because I see these errors in connection with the use of the storage agent.

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

Hmm well one server (different one to the original post) that has Insight 7.0 agents on it is logging these errors at an alarming rate... I have disabled Fibre Array Information and I will see if it gets any better

Re: Windows 2000 CPQKGPSA error

The main drawback to this workaround is that you would no longer get Failed Drive alerts. The problem with the SIM agents is one that won't be resolved by Support without a SIM software support contract.
Let me know what happens.
