Ask me anything thread for next video blog
Hello Morpheus community!
I've done a couple of video blogs with HPE Morpheus expert Sean Jabro. On Friday, while recording our latest episode, it occured to us it would be great if we could get questions from you that we'll answer on our next video, probably in late October or early November.
So let's do this: if you have a question (that isn't urgent) and you'd like Sean and I to answer your question, leave it as a reply on this thread. We'll take the top questions that have the most "kudos". So if you'd like to have us answer a question someone has posted, vote it up with kudos.
There are two episodes of our Morpheus Software video blog:
-
- Episode 1 focused on the bulk migration tool. https://youtu.be/hFBhkxdSc0s
- Episode 2 is about the Affinity/anti-affinity groups: https://you.be/w2vyJo1lWew

Re: Ask me anything thread for next video blog
Can we see an entire Ceph deployment from start to finish and all the extra stuff that needs to be configured for it work? I don't have external storage in my homelab and am coming from a VMware VSAN environment both in home and work. I feel like there are many undocumented quirks with a Ceph setup missing from in the guide and many things scattered over the community forums. It would be good for a noob like me to understand this process better and maybe a video focused on this particular setup would be be beneficial to people like me as well as others coming from vSAN setups.
Also is there going to be a unified installer for Morpheus Enterprise Community Edition?
Or is it possible to install HPE VM Essentials in a trial deployment and do an upgrade to Enterprise and then apply my Community Edition license? If so could this process be captured in some kind of turtorial video?
Another video idea that I haven't seen, is what does patching and upgrades look like for this product? In VMware you had Lifecycle Manager managing firmware and patches as well as upgrades, then later images that aligned hardware firmware with correct patch level. Is there anything with Morpheus to make sure the underlying firmware for HPE products is staying in step with the software patches and upgrades to the product?
Sorry if these have already been answered in the forums but I've been following this product for a bit since it was announced and watched several tutorials (Sean's first video series, and more recently Bart Heungen's on youtube), but I haven't seen most of these questions answered yet.
I also think it would be good to make sure the new videos are on youtube and someone could make a sticky of the forums with any relevatant installation videos or series of videos for others new coming in.
Thanks for listening!

DNS as a Service
Hello,
I have a PowerDNS server, and I know it supports hosting multiple zones. I’m looking to create a DNS as a Service (DNSaaS) offering, where customers can consume the service through catalogs—allowing them to host their own zones, manage records, and perform DNS operations independently

Re: Ask me anything thread for next video blog
@jamgwert81 I was out on vacation last week and just saw your questions. Thanks for them. I'll answer a couple that I think I know the answer to:
- I'll ask about Ceph deployment - not sure there's a video but I'll see what I can dig up.
- Unified installer - I have not heard of us considering that. I'm not an OS guy but I know with VM Essentials we have the "unified installer" for Ubuntu because we require Ubuntu for it. We now have our own version of Ubuntu that we include in the iso and that's the "unified installer". With Morpheus Enterprise, we support many versions of Linux so I'm not sure I see why we'd need that when the coverage is for several versions including Ubuntu, Debian, RHL, SUSE and Amazon Linux.
- VM Essentials trial upgrade to Morpheus Enterprise with Community Edition license - I don't think so but I'll poke around more on that. My understanding is with VM Essentials, the license is built in and has a time bomb. There's not a way to apply a license to it. But I could be wrong but if I am, its a super secret back door.
- Other video ideas.... noted. I'm friends with Bart and have known him for many years going back to when I was the HPStorageGuy. In fact, had dinner with him at Discover Las Vegas (twice).

Re: Ask me anything thread for next video blog
@CalvinZito Thanks for the reply! Would love to see a Ceph deployment. I have this trial working ok after about 6-7 reloads, and now understand the process, I think. It's fun learning a new product. I've made some notes of things, but wondering what I might be missing to make this work even better.
To add to my request for a unified installer for Enterprise with Community Edition license. I'm not a Linux guy, please keep that in mind from someone coming over from an enterprise VMware install. I found the unified installer for VM Essentials pretty easy to deploy. I find it odd there would be no plans for this simplistic unified installer to be replicated with your Enterprise product. When installing ESXi whether it be for homelab or enterprise, the OS install process is the same. Insert ISO, answer a few questions, pick target drive, click install, then set IP. It shouldn't be harder than that. I understand others who are more Linux savvy might want to install on the OS of their choosing, but wouldn't it make sense to also have a unified Enterprise installer for people that still want to use Enterprise but not necessarily do all the manual setup of the host?
My understanding from sitting through some of the demos of this product at HPE Discover, Brad Parks indicated that going from Essentials to Enterprise is a license key upgrade because the underlying software is the same. I found documentation that outlines this upgrade process which is a few steps more than just applying a license key, but doesn't seem that complex. I was wondering if I could follow that same guide to upgrade from VM Essentials to Enterprise, and then apply my Community Edition license key?
To me whether I'm installing Essentials, Enterprise or Community Edition the basic install process should be the same experience.
Thanks for listening.

Re: Ask me anything thread for next video blog
Could you publish examples for deploying virtual machines using IaC ? In short, practical examples to use Morpheus Enterprise. Thank you!
