Good day
I am looking for some guidance on the storage configuration for a Alletra 4140 Storage Server.
The unit has 2 x HPE SR932i-p Gen11 storage controllers and each controller has 17 x 20TB SAS disks and 2 x 7.68TB SSD disks.
I assume the SSD disks are for caching but need some documentation to setup the raid using Raid 6 and then setup the 2 x SSD disks to be used as caching. To setup the Raid 6 using the 17 x 20TB SAS disks is not a problem just want to know how to include the 2 x SSD disks for the caching part.
There is HPE NS204i-u Gen11 controller for the boot device where will be installing Ubuntu for Veeam Immutability.
Thank you

SolutionIf you're configuring that server for Veeam immutability and you have the HPE NS204i-u Gen11 NVMe Hot Plug Boot Optimized Storage Device for boot, I don't think those SSDs will be of much use. You may want to ask your account team if they could send you 4 additional 20TB drives instead.
In the current version of Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1, Veeam recommends installing only the repository role on a Hardened Linux Repository server. So in VBR 12.1, the SSDs will not be used for any advanced restore operations like vPower NFS cache during instant VM recovery. This would all be done by the mount server role which would be installed on a different server.
This technical whitepaper may help if you're willing to do some dry reading. It was written by HPE Solutions Engineering in colaboration with Veeam. Might be worth a read to review the BOMs at the end to be sure your server configuration is at least close to what the document recommends.
