Degraded SAS link
For HF40 on OS 5.2.1.800-930936-opt, are there any cli methods to get detail on SAS interfaces and better isolate the cause of the below log entries for link degradation between the head shelf & expansion shelf?
These were logged only on the "B" controller a few hours after a brief power circuit outage that impacted power to one controller and ethernet interfaces on both controllers caused failover from the "A" controller. The "B" controller is currently active now while its SAS port is amber. The power outage resolved and the "A" side for the head shelf & expander including SAS ports is all green. Is there a reason this sequence of events wouldn't automatically trigger failover to "A"?

Re: Degraded SAS link
Hi
Yes, there are CLI methods to get details on SAS interfaces on HPE Nimble Storage HF40 running OS 5.2.1.800-930936-opt. You can use the following commands to get information on SAS interfaces:
1. ) To list all the SAS ports on the array, you can use the following command:
nimble --query all-ports
2. ) To get details on a specific SAS port, you can use the following command:
nimble --query port --id <port_id>
Replace <port_id> with the ID of the SAS port, you want to query. You can get the ID of the port from the output of the first command.
Regarding the link degradation between the head shelf and expansion shelf, you can check the following:
- Check the cables and connectors for any physical damage or loose connections.
- Check the SAS firmware version on both the head shelf and the expansion shelf. If they are not running the same version, you may need to upgrade the firmware.
- Check the SAS topology configuration to ensure it is correctly set up.
As for why the sequence of events did not trigger a failover to "A," it is difficult to say without further information. You may want to check the failover settings to see if they are configured correctly. You can also check the event logs for any related messages.
Hope this helps.!!
Regards
Mahesh

Re: Degraded SAS link
Hi
Yes, it is possible to access the HPE Nimble command-line interface (CLI) from a remote admin SSH session using the management IP address.
To access the HPE Nimble CLI via SSH, you need to use an SSH client such as PuTTY or OpenSSH to connect to the management IP address of the Nimble Storage array. Once you have established an SSH session, you can enter Nimble commands just as you would if you were using the CLI locally on the array.
To access the HPE Nimble CLI remotely via SSH, follow these steps:
1. Open an SSH client on your local machine.
2. Enter the IP address of the HPE Nimble array's management interface as the host name or IP address to connect to.
3. Enter the username and password for the HPE Nimble array when prompted.
4. Once you have established the SSH session, you can enter Nimble commands just as you would if you were using the CLI locally on the array.
For example, if you want to display the current volume configuration, you can enter the following command:
Nimble OS $ vol –list
Please Note: The available commands may depend on the specific version of HPE Nimble OS running on the array, as well as the user permissions associated with your account.
Hope this helps.!!
Regards
Mahesh

Re: Degraded SAS link
Clarifying the last reply - the "nimble" command doesn't seem to be available when ssh'd into this array's management ip using the admin account. Only those other commands are available. This is the result:
Nimble OS $ nimble
bash: nimble: command not found

Re: Degraded SAS link
Hi
May I suggest you try the below steps.
1. SSH into the Nimble array's management IP using an SSH client, such as PuTTY.
2. Enter your username and password to log in to the array.
3. Type "su" to switch to the root user.
4. Type "nimble" to access the Nimble CLI.
Note: you will need administrative privileges to access the "nimble" command. Also, it's important to ensure that you are running the appropriate version of the Nimble OS that supports the "nimble" command.

Mahesh

Re: Degraded SAS link
Hi
From the output shown, It seems that the "nimble" command and the "sudo" command are not available on your current CLI session. This could be due to the fact that you are logged in with a limited user account, or that the Nimble OS version you are using does not support these commands.
You can try to access the "nimble" command by logging in with a privileged account, such as the "root" user, or by using the "su" command to switch to a privileged user using the below command:
Nimble OS $ su -
This command should prompt you for the password of the privileged user. Once you have entered the password, you should have access to the "nimble" command and other privileged commands.
If the "su" command is not available, you may need to contact HPE Nimble Tech Support for further assistance.
Regards
Mahesh.

Re: Degraded SAS link
"admin" user account which has the administrator role is being used for the ssh login - "nimble" or "su" commands are not available under this account on this array.
ssh as root is expecting key-based authentication and terminates the connection. From the admin login is there a way to acquire a key to use for root user login?
