HPE OneView qcow2 Fails to Boot on KVM (Rocky Linux 9.4)
HPE OneView qcow2 Fails to Boot on KVM (Rocky Linux 9.4) Environment:
- KVM Host OS: Rocky Linux 9.4
- libvirtd (libvirt): 10.0.0
- Emulated machine: pc-q35-rhel9.4.0
- Guest VM: HPE OneView (qcow2 image)
HPEOneView-9.00.00-0493574-disk1.qcow2
HPEOneView-9.30.00-0502470-disk1.qcow2
Issue:
After importing the HPE OneView qcow2 image into my KVM environment, the VM fails to boot and drops into dracut emergency mode.
In dracut mode, there are no storage devices available under /dev/, meaning I donтАЩt see sda, vda, or any other disk-related entries.
I also noticed that Rocky Linux 9.4 does not provide IDE as a disk interface option, which may be related to the issue.
when I try to force an IDE disk with:
<disk type='file' device='disk'>
<driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/>
<source file='/path/to/disk.qcow2'/>
<target dev='hda' bus='ide'/>
</disk>
I get error:
error: unsupported configuration: IDE controllers are unsupported for this QEMU binary or machine type
Questions:
- Has anyone successfully run HPE OneView on KVM with Rocky Linux 9.4?
- Is there a workaround to get the disk recognized in dracut mode?
- Does HPE OneView require a specific disk bus type that is no longer available in newer KVM versions?
Any help or guidance would be appreciated! Thanks!

Re: HPE OneView qcow2 Fails to Boot on KVM (Rocky Linux 9.4)
HPE OneView virtual appliance is built using IDE drive virtualization.
If, for example, your KVM only supports SCSI disk drives, it will not work.

You probably already know, but these are the KVMs that HPE has validated and supports (they have IDE disk):
