Organizing servers into groups - question
Hello OneView experts,
We recently deployed our first HPE OneView appliance and I’m in the process of organizing servers into groups.
From what I know so far for organizing servers, I’m able to assign labels to individual servers and also able to customize the Dashboard to display a custom panel that will show pre-defined server group.
Could you please let me know if there is a way in OneView to create server groups/containers and sub groups/containers inside them?
I would like to organize our servers as follows:
-Parent groups/containers at the top of the tree that represent geographical regions.
-Inside the parent groups/containers I would like to configure several sub groups that represent smaller offices.
Please let me know
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Organizing servers into groups - question
You're looking fo Scopes. While Labels are useful, do know that they are created and deleted on demand. Meaning, if a label does not exist, it is created. If the label is removed and is the last assocaited resource, it is removed without confirmation. Scopes on the other hand are managed resources. Only Infrastructure Administrator and Scope Administrator roles can manage scope CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations.

Re: Organizing servers into groups - question
Hello Chris,
Thank you for your response.
I do have several follow up questions.
We have a small team of server administrators who will be utilizing HPE OneView management console.
All server administrators will have Infrastructure Administrator privileges in the OneView. We are not looking to restrict resources displayed in the OneView user interface for the server administrator team as all admins will be performing the same tasks.
I was wondering if there is any way in HPE OneView to organize servers into groups.
We are currently managing dozens of HPE servers in multiple location and it would be very convenient for us to quickly view their status and manage servers by locations and installed OS.
So far from what I was able to find in OneView 8.4 user guide, we can only organize servers by assigning them labels and then creating custom dashboard panels that queries server labels and displays desired server group in a custom panel on the Dashboard.
Unfortunately, we noticed that the Dashboard customization is not a global setting and will not apply to all users. All Dashboard customization appears to be only applicable to a currently logged in user. We use AD authentication to access OneView.
Please let me know if you may have any suggestions.
Thank you,
Mark

Re: Organizing servers into groups - question
Hello Mark,
Good day!
HPE OneView is a powerful infrastructure management solution, and it offers ways to organize servers into groups and customize the dashboard for different views. To address your specific requirements:
1. Organizing Servers into Groups
Yes, HPE OneView allows you to organize servers into groups. You can create server profiles and templates, and then assign those profiles or templates to the servers. These profiles and templates can be customized based on your geographical regions and smaller offices. Here's how you can do it:
Geographical Regions>> Create server profiles or templates that are specific to each geographical region. Assign servers to these profiles or templates based on their location.
Smaller Offices>> Similarly, you can create server profiles or templates for each smaller office within a geographical region. Assign servers to these profiles or templates accordingly.
This way, you can structure your server organization based on your geographical hierarchy.
2. Customizing the Dashboard:
You can create custom dashboard panels to display the desired server groups. The dashboard customization can be tailored to your specific requirements, but you're correct that it's user-specific. To ensure all your server administrators see the same dashboard, you might consider creating a standard dashboard template and sharing it with all users. Here's how:
>> Create a customized dashboard with the panels that show the server groups based on geographical regions and smaller offices.
>> Save this dashboard as a template.
>> Share the dashboard template with all your server administrators.
>> By sharing the template, you can maintain consistency in how your team views server status and management tasks.
3. User Privileges:
You mentioned that all your server administrators will have Infrastructure Administrator privileges, and you don't want to restrict their access. In HPE OneView, Infrastructure Administrator privileges typically grant access to all resources. However, for the organization and customization aspects, you can use shared dashboard templates as mentioned above to ensure a consistent experience across your team.
4. Labels:
While labels can help with server organization, as you noted, they are user-specific and don't provide the hierarchical structure you're looking for. Leveraging server profiles and templates is more suitable for the kind of organization you described.
HPE OneView's user interface and features may evolve with new versions, so be sure to check the latest user documentation or consult with HPE support for any updates or additional features that may address your needs. The ability to create custom dashboards and templates should help you achieve the server organization you're looking for while ensuring consistency across your team.
