vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

So, after doing some reading, I see that the new vSphere LifeCycle manager is only supported by HPE Ilo Amplifier. Seeing as we run Oneview for all our remote support, and general firmware patching for our servers, will there be a newer Oneview which will support lifecycle manager, or will we have to deploy out yet another appliance and run Ilo Amplifier AND Oneview together to use the full lifecycle manager funtionality?

I dont mind waiting and hanging on with Oneview and no lifecyle manager support, as long as I know its coming down the line!

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

Hi

I can't comment on OneView intergration but what I do know is that iLO Amplifier can not update machines that are managed by OneView.  I assume by your question you would fall in to this catagory...

For now unfortunatly you'll probably have to wait...

If you've not seen it the following might provide further info - https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=a00097866en_us

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

The HPE HSM plug-in for vLCM is included in iLO Amplifier Pack v1.60, however there is no update on Oneview which will support lifecycle manager.

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

I haven't tested it myself, but my understanding is there was some loosening of the rules others mentioned above for this.

If you set the OneView Server Profile \ Firmware Baseline to Managed Manually, supposedly you can then use iLO Amplifier via vLCM to push out updates.

My assumption is this is effectively a work-around until the OneView team adds direct vLCM capability or some kind of Intermediary VM.

Hi,

is their any support for Lifecycle Manager and OneView planned?

Thanks

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

Although we can't comment on a public forum about potential new features or products, it is always helpful to understand what requirements you would be looking for.

Is there anything specific that you would want in a OneView-vLCM integration?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

vLCM should be able to use OneView for Firmware and Drivers. Also we use OV for provisioning for settings in BIOS, iLO, etc.

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

I am confuded , Would you please say finally for use life cycle manager and integrate it with vsphere7 now had to deploy ILO Amplifier or can use oneview ?

I am using oneview for ProactiveHA (Monitor Type not Manage) now is that possible also install Amplifier or just can use one of them ?

What does this means ? " iLO Amplifier Pack does not support firmware or driver updates on HPE ProLiant Blade/Synergy servers if they are
managed by HPE OneView or VMware vCenter."

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

Hi

Hopefully the following will help - https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-a00029513en_us#N1001E

Does iLO Amplifier Pack work with servers that are managed with HPE OneView?

Yes, iLO Amplifier Pack can discover and inventory servers that are managed by HPE OneView Advanced. However, all server actions are disabled. Complete iLO Amplifier Pack functionality is available for servers that are monitored with HPE OneView Standard.

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

I am really confused according your document  " https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=a00100271en_us" on Page 15  this mentioned " iLO Amplifier Pack does not support firmware or driver updates on HPE ProLiant Blade/Synergy servers if they aremanaged by HPE OneView or VMware vCenter."  but here show different things " https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-a00029513en_us#N1001E"

which ine is correct ?

What does means " All Servers action are disabled here " :
Yes, iLO Amplifier Pack can discover and inventory servers that are managed by HPE OneView Advanced. However, all server actions are disabled

I have added my HPE server as Monitor role in oneview not Manage

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

Hi

They both say the same thing, if a server or blade is managed by OneView then you can't use iLO Amplifer to do any of the updates. I assume by all server actions will be disabled it means that you won't be able to updatae the firmware/drivers or make any changes and those options won't appear.

You can however perform and Inventory.

As your servers are monotiored (not managed) by OneView you'll be able to use iLO Administrator to perform update.s

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

As I understood When we add blad or servers to oneview as Monitored thus can add to ILO Amplifier for Update Firmware and Monitor and .... and If we add Blad or Server to oneview as Managed thus we cannot add it same time to ILO Amplifier

Is that correct ?

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

The other question :

Is that possible just update Firmware and addons with lifecycle manager and not update ESXi ?

Re: vSphere 7, ILO Amplifier and Lifecycle Manager...

Yes, it is possible.

vLCM uses a concept called a Cluster Image, which consists of 3 parts:

1. ESXi Version (required): The base image is an ESXi release version that contains an image of VMware ESXi Server and additional components such as drivers and adapters that are necessary to bring up a server

2. Vendor Add-on (optional): A vendor add-on is a collection of software components for the ESXi hosts that OEMs create and distribute. For HPE this is called the HPE Customization for HPE Servers, and is required when using the base VMware ESXi image (not required when using the HPE custom ESXi image)

3. Firmware and Drivers Add-on (optional): The firmware and drivers add-on is a special type of vendor add-on designed to assist in the firmware update process. For HPE, this uses either the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) or the VMware Update Pack (VUP)

So if the ESXi version in the Cuuster Image is the same as what is already installed on the host, then it will not perfom any ESXi update (but since the ESXi version is required, you still have to have it defined in the Cluster Image). So you would create a Cluster Image that has the same ESXi version that is already installed, and then specify a newer SPP/VUP for the third item

Thanks,

Doug
