We have several ProLiant servers in our data center, which are backed-up to a Compaq ProLiant 6400r server with a DLT Tape Drive. I recently purchased a new HP StorageWorks DAT 72x6 Autoloader (External) to replace the broken HP DLT, 40/80GB, LVD Tape Drive (External).
The vendor who originally installed the server had the DLT, 40/80GB, LVD drive plugged into the Compaq Smart Array 431 controller.
I've read that HP “Does not recommend connecting the DAT 72 Autoloader to a RAID disk controller”, but instead recommends the use of an Ultra 160 SCSI Host Bus Adapter (C7474A).
Therefore, my questions are:
1. Will an Adaptec SCSI 29160 Ultra160 SCSI Controller work with an existing SA-431 Controller in this ProLiant 6400r server?
2. Can the DAT 72 Autoloader be connected to the Adaptec SCSI Card 29160 Controller?

Solution
Jeffery:
1. The adaptec controller should not even interact with the Smart Array controller at all. It is a separate device.
2. The smart answer is, I'd have to check the support matrix. The quick answer is that since the Adaptec card is sort of Industry Standard and widely used, I highly doubt that it would NOT work.

Steven I would like to take a moment to thank you for your quick response to my question confirming the technical document that I saw posted.
