Is it possible to run the Smart Array 3200

in some other hardware setup than in a Compaq server?

It sould be nice to keep the server up and running while I install and configure the new system on another machine.

I have one Cpq server only available, and I'm going for a smooth swap from RedHat Linux to a system with SuSE Enterprise Linux, so to keep down time to a minimum I'd like to do the setup on another machine.

no... SA controllers only work in Compaq servers...

Oh well, since nobody "answered in time", I just tried. It works perfectly well on a standard ASUS motherboard with no other Compaq parts than the 3200 controller.

No problems at all.

Wow i'm surprised about that... the controllers are very hardware centric... does ACU work?

Re: Is it possible to run the Smart Array 3200

Yes, both SMART-2 and SA3200 works, and the ACU works as well, at least in Windows 2000, I can't say for the Linux variants yet, that still has to be tried.

Well I'm glad you got it work. I think I'll try it sometime. I have been told that the controller has issues storing metadata when it's not in a proliant.

Re: Is it possible to run the Smart Array 3200

I can't say for sure, but it really seems to work. What kind of metadata should that be?

I've configured an array on the 3200, swapped to SMART-2/DH and it immediately recognised the array as configured. Also, vice versa.

Re: Is it possible to run the Smart Array 3200

metadata = the configuration of the controller, the arrays, the arrays configuration etc...

Well, all I can say is that it seems to work no matter how I reconfigure and swap controllers between the SMART-2/DH and the SA3200.
