HPE Synergy Chassis Interconnect question

I have a client with a 3 frame synergy system. Currently they only have 2 16Gb FC interconnects on the back (1FC interconnect in Chassis1 and one in Chassis 2 and none in chassis 3) and I was looking at adding more FC interconnects to increase high availability and bandwidth. The plan is to add a single FC interconnect to chassis 1 and 2 and then two to chassis 3.

Is there any concern in adding new interconnects to the Synergy chassis? Like if the existing FC interconnects have a lower FW version, would it trigger an immediate upgrade or some other performance impacting event?

Any insight is appreciated.

Re: HPE Synergy Chassis Interconnect question

Hello,

My first question is are the three enclosures connected and configured as one Logical Enclosure (LE)?  The reason I ask is because the description of the configuration does not seem valid. Fibre Channel ICMs do not span across frames. Synergy has three Fabrics.

  • Fabric 1 - ICM bays 1 and 4
  • Fabric 2 - ICM bays 2 and 5
  • Fabric 3 - ICM bays 3 and 6

FC ICM can go in Fabric 1 or Fabric 2 and you must populate the both bays for module redundancy.

So from your description enclosure 1 has one 16GB FC module and enclosure 2 has one 16GB FC module. If you add modules they will need to be discovered and claimed by OneView. There will be no automatic F/W updgrade or downgrade. You will have fo reconfigure the FC LIG to add the new ICM and then update the LE. I would engage HPE support for the correct steps just to be sure.

Regards,
